Charlotte Y. Carson
Virginia Beach - Charlotte Yates Carson, 67, joined her parents and her beloved daughter Shellie in heaven on February 27 after fighting a courageous 12 year battle with breast cancer.
Charlotte was predeceased by: her parents, Harold Yates and Nannie Willis Yates; her daughter, Mary R. "Shellie" Carson, who was killed August 14, 2005; and her brother-in-law, Ronald W. Cowan Sr. She is survived by: her loving husband of 29 years, William H. "Bill" Carson and children, Andrew "Drew" Carson, Tammy (and Dean) Walker and their sons, Ryan and Eric, and James Trai (and Wendy) Forrester and their daughter, Nicole; her sister, Exie Yates Cowan; her brother-in-law, Richard "Chip" Carson; her nephew, Ronald Cowan; her nieces, Tanya Cowan and Jeanne Cowan; her grandniece, Jaiden; her uncles, Warren Yates and the Honorable Delegate John Yates; her aunt, Ruth Yates; and many loving cousins.
Charlotte was a native of Norfolk, Virginia and graduated from Maury High School in 1962. She received her BS from Cowan and Radford College and her MS from ODU. She retired in 2002 after devoting 35 years to a career as a public school teacher. She spent five years teaching the sixth grade in Norfolk and then spent the remainder of her career as a Special Education teacher in Virginia Beach elementary, middle and high schools. After retiring she worked for 5 years at ODU as a supervising teacher, easing the transition to teaching for those in the "Career Switchers" program.
Throughout her life, Charlotte taught Sunday School and was involved in countless other church service activities. In her youth, she was a founding member of Brentwood Baptist Church in Norfolk. After her marriage, she worshipped at Foundry Methodist and King's Grant Presbyterian churches in Virginia Beach. She loved to travel during her summer vacations with several fellow teachers, and later with her husband and Shellie and Drew. She enjoyed European vacations, including two with her family, countless road trips and camping trips up and down the East Coast and across country to visit friends, family and historic sites. She had an avid interest in gardening, which she inherited from her parents, and was a member of the May Farm Garden Club. She was an active member of Parents of Murdered Children, Inc (POMC).
The Carson family extends their heartfelt thanks to the caring network of family, friends, neighbors, and medical professionals who supported Charlotte throughout her arduous struggle with cancer.
There will be a celebration of Charlotte's life at 12 noon on Saturday, March 3 at King's Grant Presbyterian Church (KGPC), 745 Little Neck Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: "Justice for Shellie", 1083 Independence Blvd, Box 163, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. "Justice for Shellie" is a group which was formed in 2010 by students and adults (including Charlotte, Bill and Drew), as www.JusticeForShellie.com. The group is dedicated to assisting the Virginia Beach Police in finding out who murdered Charlotte's daughter Shellie over 6 years ago.

So sorry to hear of your loss and know my prayers are with you. Charlotte was the reason Principal Frank Peele hired me as a transfer teacher to Kempsville Middle School. She was a dear colleague and will be missed. I knkw God has reunited Shellie with her by now and they are catching up with each other. May God hold her family and friends in the palm of His hand.

In death as in life.
One journey ends. And another begins.
But life itself carries on. And never ends.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Always remember the legacy which our dear Charlotte leaves behind. Remember the many lives which she made a difference in....during those many years of dedicated teaching. As she so nourished her gardens, she also nourished those many special children who were given that special attention.

Bill,
I'm so sorry to read of Charlotte's passing. It was a pleasure to take care of her - I enjoyed that last weekend we had together. I am sure that she is now with your beloved daughter in heaven.
I wish I could attend the services, but I have to work - however, I would be honored to contribute to Justice for Shellie.
Thinking of you in your time of need -

While I don't personally know your family, please know that the community's heart is broken. We all want justice for Shellie and, as a mother, it is so upsetting that your beautiful Charlotte never saw justice served. She is with her baby again. May you find comfort during this time.
