Christopher GAY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jul. 30 to Jul. 31, 2013.
GAY, Christopher Matheson
C.D., M.M.M.
Suddenly on Sunday July 28, 2013, in his 66th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Shirley (Maheral). Dear Father of Andrea Elizabeth and Peter Matheson. Cherished Grampy of James and Victoria Foottit. Loving Godfather of Kristina Maheral Sundin. Dear brother of Melissa Tsangaris (Andreas). Proud Uncle of Theo and Matthaios Tsangaris. Predeceased by his parents Aubrey Matheson Gay and Helen Louise Roberta (Emmerson). Son-in-law of the late Elwood and Inez Maheral. Brother-in-law to the Maheral Family - Allan (Donna), Bruce (Rachel), Ken (Suzanne), Glen (Aline), Wayne (Patricia) and Connie (Claude Graziadei).
Chris was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He joined the Canadian Air Force in September 1967 where he had a 13-year career before retiring in 1979. He then worked for Automatic Electric in Brockville. Following this, Chris worked at Microtel and BC Telephone in Vancouver, BC. He returned to Ottawa in 1987 with BC Telephone. While in Ottawa, Chris worked for several companies, including Northern Telecom, Lavalin and CAL, where he specialized in international business.
In 1996, Chris took a calculated risk and joined Resorption Canada Limited (RCL) to lead a world-changing waste conversion technology company. In 2005, RCL became Plasco Energy Group, where Chris held an executive leadership position. While at Plasco, he led the company's efforts abroad, including establishing Plasco's presence in China. To his very last day Chris worked passionately to ensure the success of this technology.
Chris will be greatly missed by his many family, friends and business associates. Chris requested that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Ottawa Heart Institute or The Ottawa Hospital Foundation for Respiratory Research.
Friends may visit at the Garden Chapel of Tubman Funeral Homes, 3440 Richmond Rd., Nepean (between Baseline Road and Bayshore Drive) on Wednesday, July 31st, from 6 to 9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in the Garden Chapel on Thursday, August 1st, at 11 a.m.
Tributes, donations and condolences may be made at www.tubmanfuneralhomes.com.

Shirley, I just learned of your loss today...Please accept my sincere sympathy. I know it is of no comfort at this time but how wonderful to be able to refer to your husband and the father of your children as your "best friend" until the very end! Pat Kiperchuk

I am shocked and saddened to learn of Chris' sudden passing. I haven't seen Chris in more than a decade -- we last bumped into each other at QCH's neonatal unit when both of our daughters were giving birth. But, I have followed the fortunes of Plasco in the news and applauded its successes, knowing of Chris' early and ongoing commitment to high-temperature waste-to-energy conversion.

We were colleagues at CAL/EMS for several years and lived in the same rural community. Chris was always the consummate professional. But, I remember him more as a wonderful human being: engaging personality, wonderful sense of humor, empathic and fun-loving. And, of course, he had that admirable, inspiring entrepreneurial streak. As others have observed, though, Chris was first and foremost a family-man who was unabashedly proud of Andrea and Peter. It was obvious that he was devoted to Shirley and admired her professional achievements.

It is always heartbreaking when someone you admire passes away. But, it is especially distressing when a life force as positive, vital and powerful as Chris Gay is taken at such a young age. I hope that Shirley and Chris' entire extended family will take some solace in knowing that he was fondly esteemed by those of us who had the great fortune to work with him.

Shirley, Andrea, Peter, James and Tori, along with the rest of your family...our deepest condolences on your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I am thankful we had the pleasure of getting to know Chris. We will all miss his gentle soul, and his kind heart. Chris positively beamed when talking about each of you! His eyes would shine when he talked of his pride in Peter and Andrea's accomplishments, and there was a special twinkle when sharing stories of his grandchildren. Chris was a great example of a good friend and family man, as well as a dedicated company man, but he shone brightest when in his role of husband and best friend to you Shirley. Watching Chris look at you and talk to you with such pride and respect gave us a small window into the special bond that you shared. May your memories bring you peace in the days ahead.

Dearest Shirley, Andrea and Peter,

It's the little things, the small, everyday ocurrences that you will remember. The laughs, the stories, the smiles. And even though it seems like you can never recover from your loss, it is these very memories that will help push the pain away and bring back the smiles.

As hard as it seems, you will get through this difficult time and emerge stronger. Please know that I am always there for you. Whether to talk or cry or even just sit in silence with.

Lots of love
