Christopher Thomas Kucera Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 14, 2024.
Christopher Thomas Kucera passed away on July 22, 2024, with his partner, Zachary Cade Hatcher, in an airplane accident in Islip, New York. They were residents of King George, Virginia, at White Plains, an historic mansion ca 1780. They had restored White Plains together and then provided the evidence for its placement on the National Historic Registry. Chris and Zach were also active in the Fredericksburg community, where they were respected and well loved.

Chris was born May 10, 1978, in Mobile Alabama, and grew up in Middlesex County, VA, on the Rappahannock River. He was an Eagle Scout, EAA Cadet, and a 1996 graduate of Middlesex High School. He continued his education at Virginia Tech, where he received a BS in Aerospace Engineering in 2000 and a commission as 2LT in the Virginia Militia from the Corps of Cadets (ROTC). Chris had already received his private pilot license at age 17 and later added Multi-Engine, Instrument, and Commercial ratings.

His initial employment was with Booz Allen Hamilton in the Colorado Springs, CO area. In 2003, Chris joined Analytic Graphics, Inc. (AGI), as a software developer of Satellite Tool Kit, supporting satellite and communications applications. He returned to Virginia in 2008 to support AGI's Defense Department and Intelligence Community customers. In 2015, he co-founded OneSky Systems, Inc., with the mission of safely integrating Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the global airspace. In 2019, the new company was spun out of AGI with Chris providing leadership as OneSky's Vice-President of Strategy. OneSky earned worldwide recognition. One professional affiliate in Korea has said, "His death is a great loss, not only for his company, but for humanity around the world."

Chris loved gardening, maintaining historic White Plains, cooking, hosting social gatherings with Zach, painting with watercolors, flying, loving his dog, Bo, and his cat Bennie Boo. Having grown up on the water, he enjoyed any opportunity for boating, fishing, and hanging out with his siblings and friends. Chris' generous heart, humor, infectious laugh, compassion, and love of life will be sorely missed. Children saw that Chris loved with a truly open heart and was curious about everything. He loved being with children of family and friends.

Chris leaves behind many who share treasured memories of him, his father, Peter Garrett Kucera (Karen), mother, Mary Ryan Kucera ("Shelley"), siblings, Mary Kathryn Bienfang, Peter Ryan Kucera (Kristie), Michael Garrett Kucera (Penny), uncle and aunt, Thomas and Suzanne Ryan of Tampa, FL, uncle Johnathan Kucera (Sue) of Richmond, VA, cousins and adored nieces and nephews: Schyler, Joseph, Sean (Gabby), Colette, Ellis, and his great nephew, Elias.

A Celebration of Life will take place on September 6, at 3:00 PM, at the University of Mary Washington's Jepson Alumni Executive Center, Fredericksburg, VA.

I met Zach when he was at FAHASS, he introduced us (me, and my two sons) to Chris when they came to dinner one evening. we loved getting together with the two of them. We always had such a fun, relaxing time. During Covid we couldn't get together with them so we sent them a box of our homemade Halloween cookies and cakes, they took this picture of the two of them after they had opened the box. Chris also loved our chocolate macaroons. My heart is so sad, they are so loved by us and so missed.

Chris came to visit while we were living in Costa Rica. July, 2011, which can have lovely days, but is also in the middle of the rainy season. He and our friend Becky had walked the 15 or so minutes down to the beach. After they had been gone for a while it started to rain and then it was a deluge and a thunder and lightening storm. They had not come back yet. So I got in the car and drove down to the beach they had gone to and saw them absolutely trapped. They were standing under a tree and it was raining too hard to get to any kind of shelter and there was so much loud thunder and lightening, they hadn´t moved because that seemed dangerous too. They couldn´t walk home and couldn´t get help from anyone because neither of them spoke Spanish. They saw me pull up and ran to the car, soaked through and cold.
Once they were safe I remember is all thinking it was the funniest thing that this was a beach vacation.

January 31, 2011 Chris and his brother Michael were staying at a condo in Breckenridge and skiing. I drove up from Colorado Springs and we all went to the ice sculptures and out for drinks and stayed up late talking in the hot tub. I stayed at their condo. I had brought an air mattress but forgotten the pump. Chris was a problem solver. Chris and I switched off blowing it up. One of us would get close to passing out and we´d switch. We finally got it blown up and threw some blankets on it. Michael had long ago gone into the bedroom in the condo and closed the door. Chris didn´t want to wake him so we both slept on the queen sized air mattress.... Which it turned out did not hold air for the whole night, so we slowly sank to the floor.
