Claire Herthum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 15 to Sep. 17, 2008.
Claire Herthum, a native and lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, at Landmark of Baton Rouge Nursing Facility. Born Nov. 14, 1922, she was 85. "Cla-dele," as she was known to her closest friends was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, Class of 1939. Claire Adele joined the U.S. Navy during World War II, where she served as a WAVE. After completing her duty, she returned home and married Louis Walter Herthum, of Baton Rouge. She worked for the Esso Refinery and later started her long-term tenure as an employee of the state of Louisiana. She held positions as administrative assistant to the state's then-legislative auditor, J.B. Lancaster, until his retirement and continued with his successor, Joe Burris, until she was hired by Joseph N. Traigle after his appointment as collector of revenue. She stayed on as Mr. Traigle's assistant for 12 years. When Traigle left state government to become president of American Bank, Claire became Traigle's administrative assistant at the bank after she retired from the state. She remained in that position through three successive presidents and, after 11 years, retired in 1989, leaving a work history where she was greatly admired and is still fondly remembered. She is survived by two children, daughter, Claire Herthum Major, Baton Rouge; son, Louis Whitney Herthum, Santa Monica, Calif.; son-in-law, Richard Allen Major, Baton Rouge; three grandchildren, Whitney Adele Major and Alex Rurick Major, both of Baton Rouge, and Olivia Catherine Martin, of Bollingbrook, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Thelma Cowart Herthum, Baton Rouge, and Francis Herthum Lewis, Stratford, Conn.; two nieces, Leesa Lewis Heath, West Hartford, Conn., and Lori Lewis, Maui, Hawaii; two nephews, Lance Lewis, Richmond, Calif., and Lane Lewis, New York; devoted friend, Mary Lou Beck, along with many wonderful bridge buddies and numerous cousins throughout Louisiana. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Denise Adele Herthum and Diane Elizabeth Herthum; brother, Whitney Phillip Aucoin Jr.; and mother and father, Capt. Whitney Phillip Aucoin Sr. and Adele Duhon Aucoin; and brother-in-law, Harold G. Herthum. Claire was an avid bridge player and a devoted mother and grandmother. All who were fortunate to know her remember her warm, caring and giving nature. She continues to give even in death, donating her body to science through the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans. Visitation at St. Joseph's Cathedral, Fourth Street and Main, Baton Rouge, on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 1:30 p.m. until memorial Mass at 2 p.m.

Dear Claire and Louis,

Claire and I had such good times at American Bank, both at work and on occasions outside the bank at concerts and dinner. Louis, when I ran into you at the Jewlery store a couple of weeks ago you told me of Claire's illness and I had to oppurnity to remember then the kind, giving and wonderful woman she was. Claire and Louis God bring you peace and know she loved all her children/family very much.

Please accept condolences to your family from my mother.
Your mother was a first cousin to my mother. My mother is Cecile Brown, her Father was Maurice Duhon.
I don't know if any family reads these electronic guest books but if anybody does I would like to be in contact with Leesa Lewis Heath. I think it quite a coinsidence that we share a last name and would like to explore that. We may be related distantly in more than one branch. If possible ask Leesa to contact me. Thanks.

Dear Louis and Claire,

I am so sad to hear that you Mom passed away. When a friend of mine passed away a few years ago, another friend sent out this quote by Sheila Soworth. I don't know who she is, but I thought it was beautiful. It reads: " Expecting it and ready for it are two different things. You are never ready to give up on someone you love. The best you can do is expect the suddenness of the goodbye. The sad old suddenness of goodbye is the one thing you can count on." My God's grace shine upon you and your families during this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Louis & Claire,

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Since I recently lost my Dad, I can certainly understand how you are feeling and if you are like me, you know that she is at peace now. We are very lucky that we had them in our lives for so many years. I know you will miss her very much.

My thoughts and prayers are with both of you and the rest of your family.

Love,

Debbie Galland

Dear Claire and Louis and family,

I am so sorry to hear about "big" Claire. I am sure she and Harold are having a ball about now.
Your mother had a way of making you feel great when you saw her with that really big smile she always had on her face and a great big hug.

Love,

Debbie, Josh and Sydney Galland

Claire,
Although words are of little comfort, I wanted you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers. Norman joins me in sending you our deepest sympathy. Please know our hearts go out to you. Even though we know in our hearts that the circle of life is God's plan, saying good-bye to the person who knew us first is especially difficult.

Little Claire,
Lule called me and told me about your Mom. So sorry to hear about this, but she is reunited with those that have gone before her. She came to visit us with Lou years ago, and I just fell in love with her! We sat in my backyard and drank wine and laughed outloud! What a great friend she was to Lou. I am keeping you close to my heart!

Claire and Lewis,

I was saddened to learn of your mom's death. She was a wonderful lady and one I truly admired. I was just telling a co-worker that Claire taught me to drink coffee with her in the mornings; I will treasure those memories. May God give you strength and comfort at this time.

Aunt Claire, One of my most vivid memories is you teaching us the song, "Summertime" in one of the girls' bedrooms one summer morning while we jumped on the beds. And then fixing us your fried eggs with tons of bacon grease - my favorite. I'll always remember how you wrapped us up in your joy and I'll always remember your laugh. All my love, to you and to Louis Whitney and to Mary Claire, Lori
