Claude Allen Shumate, Jr. May 5, 1932 - April 23, 2004 COLUMBUS, GA - Claude Allen Shumate, Jr., was born on May 5, 1932, in Reidsville, North Carolina, the son of Lillie Walker Shumate Bullock and Claude Allen Shumate, Sr.. He died at his home on April 23. Mr. Shumate was a graduate of Reidsville High School, Reidsville, North Carolina; Transylvania University and Lexington Theological Seminary in Lexington, Kentucky; and Columbus College, now Columbus State University, in Columbus, Georgia. He was minister to churches in Kentucky and Georgia and a teacher and coach at Spencer High School and Richards Middle School in Columbus. An avid outdoorsman, he was past president and newsletter editor for the American Treeing Feist Association, which he helped to organize. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Smith Shumate; by his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Shumate Schwartz and Robert Alan Schwartz, and his granddaughter, Caitlin Beatrice Schwartz, all of Macon, Georgia; by his sister, Emily Shumate Goodman, and his brother, Marvin Franklin Bullock, of Reidsville, North Carolina; and by four nephews: Jerry Blake Goodman of Greensboro, North Carolina; Benny Lee Goodman and Mark Wesley Bullock of Reidsville, North Carolina; and Samuel Edward Bullock of Chicago, Illinois. His son, Claude Allen Shumate, III, died on December 26, 1991. The graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, April 26, in Parkhill Cemetery, with Dr. Tom Stephenson officiating, according to McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Boulevard, Columbus. Friends preferring to send a memorial gift instead of flowers may contribute to the Claude Allen Shumate, III, Endowed Scholarship Fund, Office of the Dean, Harrison School of Pharmacy, 217 Walker Building, Auburn University, Alabama, 36849-5501.

Evelyn and Kim,

Claude was the minister at both of my weddings; it meant a lot to me. He also agreed to lead the service at my mother's funeral. He was always a good friend and a great man. He will be greatly missed.
