Cliff Robinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 6, 2010.
Rev. Dr. Clifford E. (Dr. Cliff) Robinson, age 82, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, after a lengthy illness.

He was a member of Stanley Heights Baptist Church. He was a native of Nashville, Tennessee and was the only child of the late Clifford and Madalene Keeton Robinson. He attended Bob Jones College in Cleveland, Tennessee in 1946 and 1947. In January 1948 he was ordained at the Fatherland Street Baptist Church in Nashville, Tennessee. In June 1949 he enrolled in Tennessee Temple College where he graduated in 1950 & 1951, with the A.A and B.A. degrees. He received the B.D. degree from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary-Chattanooga and later received the M. Div. degree. He completed his coursework for the TH.M degree and also received his Doctorate from Central Theological Seminary in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

From 1951 to 1953 he pastored in Cleveland and Carter's Creek, Tennessee, then spent four years in evangelism. In 1957 he was asked by Dr. Lee Roberson to join the faculty of Tennessee Temple College, teaching in the areas of Psychology, Greek and Bible, which he continued until 1985.

In addition to his teaching duties, Cliff also served as the Vice President of Student Affairs and as Dean of Students at Tennessee Temple. In almost 30 years he was privileged to teach many fine students and they had a special place in his heart. He stated on a number of occasions that Kay Arthur, founder of Precept Ministries was one of his best Greek Students.

In 1958 he was again asked to join the Pastoral Staff at the Highland Park Baptist Church to serve as Associate Pastor under Dr. Lee Roberson and Dr. J R Faulkner.

For the past few years he was a member of Stanley Heights Baptist Church. Before joining Stanley Heights, Cliff also served as teacher of the Radio Bible Class and later the Men's Bible Class. For over 25 years he wrote the curriculum for the entire Sunday School. He later had these published and had recently completed another volume.

Cliff had a great love for missionaries. For almost 3 decades he was the chairman of the annual missionary conference. He was present at the charter signing meeting for Baptist International Missions, Inc., in 1960.

In 1987 he became a weekly Bible teacher at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and also served as the Interim Pastor.

Cliff enjoyed golfing, fishing and taking short Saturday road trips on his motorcycle with his friends. He was a lover of great music, particularly that of the Classical/Sacred style.

The last several years of his life, he was seen by his family as a man "of few words" who enjoyed his time at home. He could be seen having his daily lunch with his wife, Faye, at the Epicurean Restaurant. He was always available to his children for advice and help in any area.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years, Faye Robinson; son, James Robinson of Chattanooga; daughter, Deborah Robinson Atkins of East Ridge. He is also, survived by a number of cousins in Nashville.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 PM on Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Stanley Heights Baptist Church at the corner of McBrien and Ringgold Road with the Rev. Dr. Bill Compton and Rev. Brent Baughman officiating. Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be J F Reid, Ray Marler, Steve Clonts, Glenn Swygart, Charlie Nicholson and Glenn Copeland. Honorary pallbearers will be the missionaries that he so loved.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 5 to 8 PM at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Uncle Cliff was a very special man in my life. As a missionary kid, he and Aunt Faye were always there for me when I came to TTS and even took me into their home for a time. I can still hear the stories that he would tell about the days when he and Aunt Faye lived in the apartment above Dad and Mom in college. His care, love, and prayers for me and the ministry here in Hungary will be missed.
Aunt Faye, Debbie and Jamie, Please know that I'm praying for you and I grieve with you, BUT I also rejoice with you that we will all be together again one day.
Much love,
Cathy (Thompson)

Mrs. Robinson, Marla and I want you to know that we love you and are praying for you as you say good bye to the one you love. We remember our days at Temple so many years ago. I will never forget your thoughtfulness in making me a birthday cake as a freshman MK who was so far from home. On behalf of my parents, David and Elwanda Fields (missionaries in Kenya), I send our love as a family.

Our thoughts & prayers are with Dr. Cliff's wife and family. We are sorry to hear of his homegoing, but know he is with our precious Lord. I was a student from 1976 - 1978 and remember Dr. Cliff so well. My maiden name was Sondra England and I met my husband at TTU. We married and have been together for over 30 years and raised 2 wonderful sons who are serving the Lord. My 2 years at TTU were one of the most memorable in my life. The teachers & faculty greatly impacted my life as well. May the Lord give you grace and comfort in the days ahead. God Bless.

Unbelievable. Dr. Cliff to me was a great pulpiteer and brought some of the greatest messages that continue to influence my life to this day. Never forget his message on The Word Of God..."this book the Bible is an immutable book, this book the Bible is an indestructable book, this book the Bible is a miraculous book.....", etc. I still have that message and have referred to it through the years and the truths that Dr. Cliff brought out has reminded me of the greatness of God, Christ, & His Word. God bless and comfort you Mrs. Robinson, James & Debbie at this time. Without a doubt, God's grace I know will be sufficient. You are in my heart at this time & be assured of our continued prayers during these days.

Dr. Cliff was always the gentleman, I enjoyed working for him while at Tn. Temple back in the 70's. He as a man of few words then and yet he had a smile that was very becoming. I learned a great deal from him about how to make outlines for my ministry. I purchased a bible from him at one of the conferences sometime in the late 80's or early 90's - it's Teal in color and everyone has wanted it, but it's not for sale, now especailly. I have good memories of Dr. Cliff and my days at Tn. Temple. God bless you family, our prayers are for you each one.

"To Mrs. Robinson, Debbie, and Jamie" - Thanks for the friendship, love and all the wonderful memories! Our heart aches with you. Yet, we have the comfort in knowing that Dr. Cliff has exited from his body of flesh and he is now enjoying the presence of our Lord Jesus. Rest assured that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are sorry that we can't be with you because of ministry engagements in Ohio. We know that Dr. Cliff and you, as well, would want us to stay steady to the task at hand. We love you all - Dr. Cliff was a positive, Godly influence in our life! He taught us much that we will never forget, Love, David and Evelyn Dye (1 Corinthians 15) Shelbyville, TN

We will all miss Dr. Cliff...my prayers and sympathy to the family. Mrs. Robinson you have always been a lady par excellance (in my opinion). Debbie I will alway remember our trip to Fl many years ago. We had a good time! ( you may not remember). And James may God bless you in a special way....I remember Dr. Cliff in chapel saying "We know who you are..." Did he really? Anyway, good memories...may God bless you all....-Joyce (Ellsworth) Lester
