Collin McKay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 7, 2014.
Collin Charles McKay passed away suddenly on March 30, 2014 at the age of 39.

He is the son of Jim and Karen McKay, and the brother of Jennifer McKay and Heather McKay Schraeder. Collin will be remembered as a free-spirited and joyous person who was loved by everyone he met.

Collin was a 1993 graduate of Darlington School. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Massachusetts- Amherst in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, where he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. Collin then received his Juris Doctor from the University of Georgia in 2000. After law school, Collin enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany for his 4 years of service. Collin served in Kosovo and then in Iraq. He received numerous medals during his service. After being honorably discharged from the Army in 2005, Collin moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where he worked for State Farm. In late 2013, Collin transferred to Long Beach, California.

In addition to the relatives named above, Collin is survived by his former spouse, Dana Glauner of Monroe, North Carolina; grandmother, Marjorie McKay of Ashville, North Carolina; and two nephews, Allen and Charles Schraeder of New Braunfels, Texas. He leaves several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and an enormous number of friends from all around the country and the world. He was preceded in death by his infant brother, Cameron McKay, and grandparents, Charles and Hazel Armbruster of Cincinnati, Ohio and James Kelly McKay of Birmingham, Alabama.

Collin will be missed by all whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to K9s for Warriors, a program that provides service dogs to veterans dealing with PTSD. Donations can be made by mailing a check to K9s for Warriors, 260 S. Roscoe Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082, or by visiting their website at www.k9sforwarriors.org.

A Celebration of Collin's Life will be held on Saturday, April 12 from 12-4 at Harvest Moon in Rome, GA.

It has been a year now Collin and you are still loved, remembered and missed just as much. There is a piece of my heart that will never mend and you will never be forgotten. As my brother in law, you were the only brother I ever had. With Love,

I just read about Collin in the Umass Alumni magazine. I was a brother with him at DU. I spent a lot of good times with Collin. I'll always remember him as friendly, intelligent, and kind. I am very sorry for your loss.

Collin was an amazing person who enjoyed people, travel, great conversation, was extremely generous to friends, neighbors and strangers, and genuinely wanted people to get along. He was exceptionally bright and accomplished in his chosen fields and had such a quick wit and humor that was not disrespectful to others, but left you waiting for the next funny thing he would say! Collin was the type of person the world needs more of. I met him at 16, had the honor of being his sister in law and am heart broken he is gone. Collin was loved and is so very missed! Colin sounds like a wonderful young man which makes your loss all the greater. Having sons, I cannot imagine the sorrow you are experiencing but I am deeply saddened by your loss. I pray that God will grant you some peace and comfort from the fact that Colin's demons are no longer chasing him or in charge of him. He is at peace.
