Corinne White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 17, 2021.
Corinne Swall White Corinne Swall White, a talented opera singer and Marin County native, passed away peacefully on October 9, 2020 in Tiburon, California. She was 92. Corinne was born on December 13, 1927 in Ross, California to Oscar and Jane Swall. She attended the Adeline E. Kent School and Tamalpais High School. She then obtained degrees from College of Marin, The Juilliard School, University of California, Berkeley and San Francisco State. Corinne began her musical career by winning a vocal Marin Music Chest scholarship to The Julliard School as a coloratura soprano in 1948. During her career, she performed as a soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Carre Theatre in Amsterdam. She also performed in Australia and Canada. In addition to performing, Corinne wrote the libretti for several operas. She also taught, serving on the music faculty at the University of California, Berkeley for 10 years in addition to teaching voice at California State University, Chico. She served on the Board of Directors of Marin Music Chest for many years. Corinne settled permanently in Kentfield, California. Beginning in the 1970s, she was heavily involved as a performer and a writer with the Mother Lode Musical Theater alongside Monroe Kanouse. Mother Lode performed locally, as well as on tour. Dear to Corinne's heart was Mother Lode's Drake Pageant, which they performed on Angel Island with a cast that included local Native American Miwok members. Other notable productions over the years included Gambling Jones, Las Posadas, the opera Voices of Califia, Nightingale of the Gold Rush, and Divas of the Golden West. Corinne traveled the world. She loved spending time outdoors, and her home of Marin County allowed her to enjoy nature throughout her life. She especially enjoyed swimming at The Meadow Club, where she was a longtime member. She is survived by her daughter, Ronnie, and her two grandsons, Madison and Spenser.

My grandmother, Corinne, cannot be held to a single description. She was an experience. Her knowledge was deep, but her music was deeper. I still hear her singing Mozart. There will never be another coloratura like her; I can assure you. What a privilege to be born under such greatness. I can only aspire to achieve the relationships she had with her community. Although it was tough sometimes growing up under such prestige, I never shied away. I completed my music degree in composition and continue to write to this day, although probably much unknown to the public, much like my grandmother. She will always be missed by those closest to her, but her legacy will be carried on. I love you grandma.

I just learned of Corinne's passing and am very sad to hear this news. I have many fond memories of visiting with her on my trips to California.

I came to become friends with Corrine through our common interest and involvement with the Drake Navigators Guild. This resulted in several years of my having many wonderful drives, visits, and phone calls with Corinne. With a kind, gentle, and generous spirit, her knowledge of history seemed only surpassed by her passion for sharing it via music.

My life has been enriched by our friendship, and I cling to the fond memories I have of her.

Corinne was a long-time member of the Drake Navigators Guild. She was a supporter of public education regarding history -- in this case regarding Francis Drake's landing at Drakes Bay in 1579. The Drake Pageant was held for many years at Drake's Beach, near where Drake landed. This performance involved students from local schools and performers and musicians from the local community. Corinne researched the actual music performed by the English and the Coast Miwok songs as the English wrote them down. (The obituary says this was at Angel Island, but that is in error.)

Corinne was a driving force in Tule Boat Adventure,
a program in which school children built a real
"Coast Miwok" tule boat and then took it to Tomales
Bay State Park to paddle it around the cove.

In addition, Corinne led performances such as Los Posadas on Angel Island and performances at the Mission in Sonoma.

Much of her music and performing work related to history: Gambling Jones tied to the Gold Rush, Los Posadas to early Spanish history in California and Drake to that early visit.

Califia was a multi-part opera which was based on several elements
of California history. Corinne much admired her composing
partner, Monroe Kanouse.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother_Lode_Musical_Theatre.

Much of Corinne's music and performing materials are now at the
Kent Library within the Marin County Library, so there are good
records, recordings, scores, posters and other materials for future
research.

She was a strong force in many endeavors. We miss her.

Though I did not Corinne personally my mother Roberta Sohner and aunt Marilyn Sohner went to Tamalpais High school together. She was a household name growing up. Blessings to family members and Rest In Peace Corky..
