Curtis Whitley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 13 to May 18, 2008.

Former Carolina Panthers center Curtis Whitley has died.

Family members said Monday night that they learned earlier in the day that Whitley, who turned 39 on Saturday, had been found dead in Texas, where he was living. They were awaiting details about the cause of his death.

Whitley started every game during the Panthers' inaugural 1995 season, then made eight starts in '96 before getting suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

He resurfaced with Oakland in 1997, but was suspended again before the '98 season and didn't play in the league again.

Whitley is a Smithfield native who played at Clemson. San Diego picked him in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL draft.

The Panthers chose him in the expansion draft.

Hey Curtis, its December 25th 2010, This is Fred and Pam Maternal Grandparents of Hannah and Curtis Jr. Want to tell you Thank You for helping us to raise the kids. What you have left them has help a great deal in raising them. When I buy them something or do something for them they say Thank You Poppy and I tell them NO Thank your dad. If he was here he will do the same. Hannah is a Cheer leader for Elsinore High and this year they won the CIF for their football division. She is also do competition Cheer her team this year coming in first place so far each time. Her tumbles, backslips like no other. for Elsinore she and her teammate are the only onces that do the tumlbing. She in the GATE program and getting good grades. She tells me she thinks about you everyday. Cw has been playing for Wildomar Pop Warner past years I tell you he has your genes. The announcer named him Quarterback Smasher, he plays Safty, special teams, rusher, He like two persons off the field he mild manner CW and on the field he plays 110% his coaches has to ask him to tone it down when he practice with his own team and don't hurt his team mate especially the quarterback. He says he wants to be a Navy Seal or in Special Services or Delta Force his uncle Ali works with Special Services and bring home hats for him. In school he doing fine he gets cees bees and aaas. He says he wants to go into ROTC and play football next year in High School. Curtis I do not make the kids do none of the above we do guide them as best as we can. What they are doing is what their hearts feels and they love doing what there are doing. Hannah now is asking for a driver license and a car. Time is going to fast. I just hope I can live until they get into college and then I can feel I did my job. Curtis sometimes we all feel your presents here and we know you are helping us to guide the kids (Teens Now) Their Health is fine the most important of all. Thank you, Fred

First, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to the family.

I remember yrs ago when *Winks* auction was open there on brightleaf blvd. Curtis and Micheal Jackson would hang out some sat nights over at the small gameroom, there beside Winks. That is how I met Curtis and Micheal. There was something about Curtis that spoke, Im bigger than this small town Smithfield, I did not go to school with Curtis nor did I know he went on to the NFL until when he joined the Panthers... but, I knew he would be something big someday....even at 13, you just knew it.

I came from that small town to end up here in Charlotte, and I'm a huge Panthers fan. The world has lost a shinning star...My blessings to the daughter and the family. RIP Curtis..You made it.

I guess God needed a excellant Center for his team in Heaven; Please Curtis help me look after your children from the heavens and visit them as often you can; They are missing you greatly; In the last few days we have felt your presents; listen to CW Jr. prayer and speak to him he is so proud of you;He carried your Football Helmet from Clemson on the plane; He held it tightly and he made sure it was stowed near him; Mr.Tony Hawk gave him a autograph and I'm sure you made it happen. You will never stop amazing us; As for Hannah She goes into a deep though of her memories of you then pulls herself together; She wanted to make scamble eggs cook with bacon grease as she remembered how you use to do for her and CW Jr. They have so many memories of you; They will be talking about you forever. I must stop now or else I will have a book written here. Love CWs & Hannahs Grandparents Fred,Pam,Aunt Christina,Uncle Ali

It was great to play beside you in 85 and 86. We shared lots of heart and sweat at SSS. We hunted, fished, "borrowed" certain people's car to cruise Benson and other crazy things high school buddies do... We kept Bojangles in business with all the boxes of chicken and biscuits we ate together. I couldn't write all our fun times and high school mischeviousness but we definitely had our share. I can only sum up how I feel by saying- You will always be in my heart as a brother and you were my best friend. I never thought I could love a "Hog" till I met you. Thanks for being my friend.

My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Whitley family. My brother, Michael, was tragically killed in February 1995 at the age of 24. It was a very difficult time for me. Curt was a best friend to me (like a brother), and I have a lot of fond memories of him while we were growing up. Camping by the Neuse River, barning tobacco, many ball games, practices, events in the classroom, and the list goes on. Curt had a special way of touching the lives of everyone that he came in contact with. If you really knew him, then you know what I mean. He too has been taken so suddenly: without warning. I would encourage everyone to remember the good times and focus on his positive traits. Life is too short; it is a race that requires endurance and patience...pace yourselves and keep on running. Curt would want that. I'm sure that he's looking down from heaven "in a country state of mind."
