Dan Younger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 25, 2023.
Dan Cole Younger, age 71, went home to be with the Lord on September 22, 2023, after a lengthy decline following a stroke. Dan was born September 19, 1952, in Sedalia, MO, to the late Robert L. and Mabel L. Younger. He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years, Debra Diehl Younger, and his brothers Corey (Rene), Mark, and Ron. Dan is also survived by his children: Erin, Kelsey (Andrew), Scott, and Brooke; and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Beverly Gilbert Younger, his brother, Robert L. Younger Jr., and sister-in-law, Glenda Turner Younger (Mark).

Dan graduated from Fort Myers High School in FL in 1970. He earned his bachelor's degree in English from LeTourneau University in Longview, TX, in 1974, and his Master of Theology from Grace Seminary in Winona Lake, IN, in 1980.

Dan cultivated many interests and passions, including researching and marking the graves of Medal of Honor recipients, playing the cello, and doing the Sunday crossword puzzles in ink pen. Dan's working careers included being a writer/editor, educator, pastor, and paramedic. Descending from a long line of story tellers, Dan enjoyed entertaining family and friends with tales of humorous antics.

But foremost was Dan's love of reading, studying, and teaching the Bible. Dan pastored churches in FL, TX, and OK. He was a gifted speaker and often engaged students and friends until the early hours of the morning with his "back porch seminary".

Dan's contagious laughter and ready smile will be greatly missed.

"For I am persuaded that not even death. . . will have the power to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:28-29

Interment will be a private ceremony at White Cemetery in Longview, TX.

Dan is the only person I know to be ticketed by a city policeman for speeding in a 40mph zone when riding a bicycle. Moberly Avenue 1972.

We have fund memories of Dan dating back to his collage days. One of those memories was his abilities as a photographer. At one time he held the position as the AV director for the LeTourneau Library. Among his responsibilities was being the official photographer for the school. If you knew Dan you know he was quite creative. You might find him standing on a trash container or shinning up a pole to get that special shot. Once, to get an original shot of a runner, he laid down on his back on the highway. We wish we could tell you if he got the results he expected, but probably not as we don´t remember ever seeing the picture.

Our love to Debbie and the family. May you be surrounded by God´s love.

Dan was a beloved friend for many years. A seminary classmate, and EMT partner, and a dear friend.
I met Dan and Bev while in seminary. We spent many times together in their home with Dan and Bev and Erin until Bev’s passing. Even after that, we spent a lot of time together. I had the privilege to be part of the wedding party in Longview when he married Deb.
This page could not hold of the number of stories I have about Dan. Stories about his personal life and our trips to pick up Correy from Winona Lake to Longview. EMT stories of the blizzard of 1976 and this Floridian thinking he is going to walk across the field to a home that called for an emergency. Many times working at the funeral home, and the many experiences we had there before multi township EMS was established. I could go on and on.
Deb and Erin and the rest of the family, may the Lord comfort you, knowing that Dan is in a place where he is fully functional once again. Deb, Free to contact me if you would like.
May the Lord bless and keep you, and I anticipate the day that we will meet Dan in Glory.

When I think of Dan it was always around large family gatherings, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Easter dinners. His family would walk in with dishes of food, by the way Dan loved Deb's strawberry pie, and Dan would have the biggest smile on his face, from the moment he walked in the door he would start talking. Dan didn't have a soft voice, it was loud, his laugh was loud and he loved an audience. He could captivate you with his knowledge on just about any subject and he had an opinion about everything, we always thought he should have been a Jeopardy contestant. Dan, your big ear to ear smile and mighty laugh will be missed, see you in Heaven.

It was a joy to know DAN at LeTourneau and see him there often as an ALUM for Hootenanny or sometimes Homecoming Weekend. Now he's had a homecoming believers thru the ages have believed was coming.
Condolences to the family. We will meet again.

Being on the debate team with him at LeTourneau. He went by Cole Younger because we both had the same first name. After he became a pastor, I asked him for advice concerning a child who was not following the Lord. Although I didn't always agree with Dan's political views, I admired his spirit and drive.

Dan´s first wife, Bev, was my cousin. I was attending Grace College while he was in Seminary. Their home was my weekend home away from my dorm. I enjoyed many meals, playing with their daughter, Erin, and their dog. Oh, and laughing. So much laughing! There are so many things.... I introduced my roommate and she was welcome too.

In more recent years, we reconnected on Facebook and shared many great conversations and lots of jokes, of course.

I have been broken-hearted about his condition. I am thrilled that he is now restored and sitting at the feet of Jesus!

Mr. Younger, remembered by me as my best friend´s weird dad, was one of those people you met and could never forget. When I think of high school, I think of the second home his house was, wild stories over dinner after a blessing. I remember hearing seminary and paramedic stories over mashed potatoes and delighting in every moment. He has a special place in my heart, as all Younger´s do. I´m so grateful for him and his family and what they mean to me, so rest in peace, Mr. Younger. Thank you for bringing my favorite people together to Fort Myers and letting me be a fixture in your home.

Dan and I shared bunk beds. I was six and he was eight. At that age he taught me astrophysics and plate tectonics. Everything he taught me turned out to be correct.
