Daniel Costello Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 7, 2024.
Dr. Daniel Costello, a distinguished professor and Dean and cherished husband, stepfather, grandfather and friend, passed away on September 6, 2024 at the age of 84. Born into a proud Irish family in Dayton, Ohio, November 16, 1939, Dan was known for his remarkable intellect, boundless curiosity, and deep love for both teaching and mentoring young people. Even as a young boy and man, he excelled - as a dedicated newspaper boy for The Journal Herald and a proud Eagle Scout earning the distinguished Wood Badge. He was preceded in death by his parents Catharine and Leo Costello and his brothers Bo and Dave Costello.

Dr. Costello graduated from Fairmont High School and was the first in his family to attend college culminating with a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Michigan State University. He spent a lifetime contributing to the academic community through groundbreaking research and inspiring lectures. His dedication to mentoring and passion for knowledge left an indelible mark on students and faculty at University of Iowa, Vanderbilt University, Southern Methodist University, University of Baltimore and Colorado State University, where he retired as Dean of the School of Business.

Outside the classroom, Dan found joy in many passions: Ohio State football, golfing, playing pool, spending time with friends (often having a cigar), and traveling. His journey to the Village of Costelloe in Ireland was a highlight of his travels across the globe. Whether exploring new cultures or indulging in the pleasures of Redbreast whiskey, Dan lived life with a sense of adventure and joy. Dan's pipe, and dog, Bunker, were favorite companions during quiet moments of reflection and puttering around the house.

Dan is survived by wife Christine Costello, his daughters Kelley Duruman and Kim Christine his grandchildren Aylin, Nev and Makoa, his nieces Pam, Lynn and Patsy and nephews Mike, Scott and Patrick who will remember him with deep affection and admiration. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to LIFEPATH, Chapters Health Foundation, chaptershealth.org/give/donate in Dan's memory. A celebration of Dan's life will be held at a time and place to be determined.

Dan will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy of knowledge, warmth, and joy will continue to bless all of us.

Dan and Tina are our wonderful neighbors who we love and adored. When June turned 2 and Tina was away, Dan came over to join in the celebration of her birthday. Dan´s company has always been pleasant and we will always remember him by the kindness of his actions. A world without Dan is definitely not the same. He will be greatly missed by all.

I had a chance to meet Dan through his wife, Tina, and dog Bunker. I immediately liked him. Reading his story let me realize how accomplished he was. A big loss for all.

Danny was one of my favorite people of all time! He was always a joy to be around whether it was playing golf, giving advice on the golf course, playing euchre or just enjoying a fine meal with friends. My love to him always.
