Daniel "Dan" Daley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 25, 2024.
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Daniel "Dan" Christopher Daley, AKA "Papa" of Wheaton, and most recently, Naperville, Illinois. He passed away at home surrounded by his family on June 4, 2024. Even in his final moments, he was a man of incredible strength and optimism. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (née Jansen), daughters Erin (Mike) and Lauren (Jeremy); his grandchildren Rylee, Haylee, Benjamin, and Grace; his mother Helen; brothers John, Nicholas, Barry, David and sister Cathleen; and many adoring family, friends, and colleagues. He was preceded in death by his brothers Tom and Gary ("Mickey").

Dan grew up in Bridgeview, Illinois where he met his wife of 42 years, Marilyn. He proudly served in the US Marine Corps, earning the rank of Sergeant by the age of 20. He was a Sharpshooter and Marksman who worked as a Quality Assurance Inspector on F-4 Phantom fighter jets during the Vietnam War Era. He later earned his degree in electrical engineering from IIT. Dan's favorite job was in sales with the test and measurement division of Hewlett Packard and Agilent Technologies.

Dan loved traveling with his family to Maui and taking his Sea Ray speedboat ("Ruby") to Minocqua, Wisconsin. He loved staying occupied at all times. Dan was always "fiddling around" with renovations or various home improvement projects. He tackled jobs of any size and difficulty, while singing a jingle of truth: "Handy Man Dan, if he can't do it, no one can!"

Dan was a selfless and wholesome being, adored by all who encountered him. He lived for his family, especially his grandchildren, and always said, "I'm still not a grown up." His kind, generous, and witty spirit will live on in our hearts.

Dan's family would like to thank Edward Cancer Centers and Lightways Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Dan and our family.

So blessed to have spent the time with you last summer. I think you and Gary could have been good buds if we had spent more time together. One of my fond memories is of our drive to spend the day in Chicago. Dan was driving rather fast and Marilyn said "Should I drive" and typically husband like, he just ignored her :). That happens in our car too!! We made it safely and had fun on the tour boat-thankful for that time and the memories and Gary so much enjoyed the guy talk.

Dan had a long career in test and measurement, I remember first meeting him when he worked in the repair center.
Dan had a good understanding of both the technical aspects of the equipment and the specific needs of the customers who use it.
Dan enjoyed:
o Technical challenges: Microwave technology is complex, so Dan had to learn a lot about it to be successful in sales.
o Building relationships: The customers for this type of equipment are specialists in their own fields, so Dan had to build strong relationships with them to understand their needs and recommend the right equipment.
o Helping customers solve problems: Microwave test equipment is used for a variety of purposes, so Dan had the opportunity to help customers solve a wide range of problems.
Starting in the Repair Center and then moving to sales of microwave test equipment shows a great career path for Dan. Here's how his experience helped him excel:
o Technical knowledge: Working in the Repair Center would have given Dan a strong foundation in understanding how microwave test equipment works. This technical knowledge would have been invaluable when selling the equipment, allowing him to explain its features and benefits to customers in a clear and concise way.
o Problem-solving skills: Repair technicians are constantly troubleshooting and fixing problems. This experience would have honed Dan's problem-solving skills, which would have been crucial when helping customers identify their needs and recommend the most suitable equipment for their specific applications.
o Customer service experience: The Repair Center involved interacting with customers who were frustrated with their equipment not working. This experience helped Dan develop strong customer service skills, which are essential for building trust and rapport with potential buyers.
o Understanding customer needs: Through repairs, Dan gained valuable insight into the challenges and frustrations faced by users of microwave test equipment. This firsthand experience would have been incredibly helpful when transitioning to sales, allowing him to anticipate customer needs and recommend solutions that addressed their specific pain points.
