Daniel Lizdas Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 15, 2013.

Daniel John Lizdas, Jr., 73, of East Granby and Sarasota, FL, adored husband of Susan Ann (Szarek) passed away unexpectedly at home on Veterans Day (November 11, 2013), a day on which he was extremely proud to be a veteran. Born in Waterbury and raised in Middlebury, he was the proud son of Daniel John Lizdas, Sr. and Mary (Dovidaitis) Lizdas. A graduate of the University of Connecticut and WPI, Dan proudly served his country as a US Army Captain in Hunstville, AL and in Vietnam. He married the catch of his life in 1966 and raised his family in East Granby, CT. He was very proud of his three children and of the life they made. Dan spent many enjoyable years as an engineer for the space program at Hamilton Standard. For his first retirement he started a successful consulting company and in his second retirement he enjoyed his home in Sarasota, FL. Dan loved spending time visiting his grandchildren in Georgia, Colorado and at home in Connecticut. He was enthusiastic about fishing on his boats, being an active member in his East Granby and Sarasota communities, and proud of his work for veterans, especially the homeless and his Vietnam Brotherhood. He will always be remembered for his dedication as a Boy Scout leader, his love of nature and always offering wise words of advice. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his three children, Daniel J. Lizdas, III and his wife Allison of Marietta, GA, Doreen and her husband TJ Jacius of East Granby, and Pamela and her husband Troy Howard of Golden, CO. He was a proud Papa to Matteus Daniel Lizdas, Eliza Jean Lizdas, Sarah Ann Jacius, Amanda Claire Jacius and Kalinda Renne Howard. Dan is also survived by the loving families of his wife's sisters, Maryann and Barbara of Chicago, IL. A funeral mass and burial will be in Sarasota, FL. A Mass and celebration of Dan's life will be held in CT at Christmas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Give Kids the World, 210 South Bass Road, Kissimmee, FL, 34746.

Dear Lizdas Family,
However it is that God works, for some reason, on this last day of February, 2014, I decided to type Dan's name into the computer. Sadly, I came upon this notice in the Hartford Courant, of Dan's untimely passing.
Dan and I went to Crosby High School in Waterbury together in the mid-1950's. We became friends taking the same Science classes. Dan's parents lived in Middlebury, and I got to visit him there several times. On one occasion, he took me for a ride in his 1953 Singer sports car. It was my first ride ever in a sports car, and with Dan's capable driving, we swept around those back road corners with delightful speed - just what two engineers-to-be enjoyed.
I looked Dan up again in the year 2000, I think. I just happened to be driving in Middlebury, right past his house. He was there, doing some work, and we had a nice conversation. He had completely forgotten the drive in the Singer all those years ago until I mentioned it to him.
We didn't keep in touch, but to this day, I thank Dan for that memorable sports car ride, and I can see by the heartfelt comments of those who knew him well as an adult, that the qualities he brought to life were what made us friends in our youth. Thankfully, he has left a wonderful legacy in his wife, children, and grand children.
I know he has been greeted in Heaven by our loving God, and I know he resides there in the peace and joy of the Lord.
My sincerest condolences and sympathy to the Lizdas family, Stephen E. Backhus

I met Dan at WPI during my senior year and later at Hamilton Standard. Dan was a member of our Space Systems golf team and since he was the type of person who always looked for ways to improve everything he did, came up with the best way to improve his score was to consume up to 6 cans of beer. Dan was also the key person in our neighborhood to get the overhead air traffic reduced. I will miss the long conversations Dan and I had when he stopped by on his daily walks. God bless the Lizdas family at this time of loss.

To The Lizdas Family: I sat next to Dan most recently at the MacIntosh Middle School Veteran celebration as he sang some patriotic hymns on Friday, November 8th. He was such an honorable man who truly loved both God and his family. From Alpha Company of the Vietnam Brotherhood, I can honestly speak for all of us when I say that he will always be sadly missed as one of our "BROTHERS". May he RIP. Amen

It was a pleasure knowing Dan. I know it must be hard on the family to have his passing at such a young age. My sincere sympathy to the family.

Dan was responsible for hiring me at HS in the spring of 1978. It was a pleasure to work for Dan who was fair, professional and had a great sense of humor. Even after Dan left HS we exchanged Xmas cards every year. Dan would keep me abreast of the doings of his family, which he was very proud. I feel honored to have known such an intelligent and really nice guy. I will miss his yearly updates. I would like to offer my deepest sympathy to his wonderful wife and family.
