Daniel Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 1, 2024.
The family of Daniel Jay Smith shares the heartbreaking news of his sudden passing on March 16, 2024, at the age of 32. Born in Denver, Colorado, on May 29th, 1991, Daniel was the only child of Craig and Lisa Benedict. While we grieve his loss, we are thankful for his life. Daniel was a quick-witted, engaging, and fun-loving young man with a great sense of humor. His gift for expressive and articulate communication allowed him to connect effortlessly with people from all walks of life. A true Colorado Native, he held an unwavering love for his home state and endless support for the Denver Broncos and the Colorado Avalanche. His connection to nature was a cherished part of his life and he found solace in the outdoors and enjoyed swimming, camping, and fishing.

Daniel was a kind soul who grappled with depression, anxiety, and addiction. The greatest of these struggles was addiction. Tragically, he lost his life due to an accidental drug and alcohol overdose. Although addiction cast a dark shadow on his journey, he will not be defined by it or the ravages that it created in his life, because he was so much more than that. We will remember him fondly and always love him. We find solace in knowing that he is finally at peace and his struggle has ended.

He is survived by his young son Axill Smith, his parents, his grandmother Jacalyn Smith, aunt Angela Smith, and many other chosen family members and friends. He is predeceased by his ex-wife Felicia Smith, grandfather Richard W. Smith, great-grandparents Manford and Jewell Schake, and great-grandmother Leta Tennant.

The family encourages anyone facing similar challenges to seek professional help promptly. Please spare your family and friends the pain of losing you. You matter, you are loved, and your path to sobriety leads to your best self.

My very first memory of Daniel is carrying him to the nursery at the hospital the day he was born. He will remain warmly in my heart forever.
