Daniel Tessier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 2, 2007.
Constable Daniel Tessier, 42, was a 15-year-veteran of the Laval police force, has died in the line of duty. Married to Repentigny police Constable Dominique Lapointe, he had two young daughters ages 10 and 12.

Tessier had formerly been a civil engineering student who gave up his studies to become a police officer, despite knowing the danger, Laval police chief Jean-Pierre Gariepy said.

He had been assigned to the morality and drug squad only one week ago, Gariepy added.

Tessier was fatally shot on March 2 during a drug bust in Brossard. His partner, Constable Stephane Forbes, 46, was shot in the arm during the operation but will survive his injury.

The two had been part of a large simultaneous crackdown on a drug-dealing network this morning with search warrants out for eight locations, six in Laval and two in Brossard.

It has been only 15 months since Laval Constable Valerie Gignac, 25, was shot to death in the line of duty.

"We have found ourselves once again in a very painful situation," Gariepy told reporters today. "Our people are under a very heavy shock."

The feeling I experience every time I hear an officer of the law has died needlessly in this country, is beyond my ability to describe. I therefore cannot imagine what the families of these fallen heroes must endure. We rise and fall each day with the safety and security that people like you, Daniel, provide us. Please know so many of us would do anything to help ease the burden of grief your family is now carrying. I just hope they may find a little comfort in knowing you died, and lived, a man to whom an entire nation is indebted. Your sacrifice was not in vain and will never be forgotten. Thank you.

My sincere condolences goes to the Tessier family. We must never forget how dangerous their job is. You never know what will happen when you are on the job.
