Danny Gans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 1, 2009.
LAS VEGAS (AP) - Singer-actor-impressionist Danny Gans, who spent more than a decade as one of the most popular entertainers in Las Vegas, died Friday. He was 52. Gans was pronounced dead in his bed shortly after police and paramedics were summoned to his home about 3:45 a.m., said police spokesman Todd Rasmussen.

Foul play was not suspected, but police were investigating "according to standard procedure," Rasmussen said.

Clark County Coroner Michael Murphy released a statement saying a medical examination would be done Friday, but it could take several weeks to receive laboratory results and determine the cause of death.

Gans' manager and longtime friend, Chip Lightman, said Gans was in good health but slept poorly after Wednesday's show and took a nap late Thursday afternoon, a day off. He stayed in bed into the evening, and his wife, Julie, summoned police when she couldn't rouse him after 3 a.m.

"This makes no sense," said Lightman, who said Gans didn't use illegal drugs, didn't smoke and had no apparent medical issues. "I managed him 18 years and health was never an issue."

Lightman described Gans, who had a bit part as third baseman Deke in the 1988 baseball film "Bull Durham," as an energetic health nut who watched his diet, loved to perform, and relished his involvement in Las Vegas area fundraisers and philanthropic causes.

Gans was mourned by two Las Vegas entertainment legends, Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn.

Like Gans and Wayne Newton, the careers of the German duo became synonymous with Las Vegas after they brought their acts to the Strip.

"We were blessed to be touched by his generous spirit, kind heart and insurmountable talent," Siegfried & Roy said in a statement.

Daniel Davies Gans grew up in Torrance, Calif., met his wife in college in San Luis Obispo, and parlayed a comedy and impression routine he developed on bus rides as a minor league baseball player into a fledgling entertainment career, Lightman said.

"Danny at that time was just a fun guy on the bus," he said.

After Gans hurt his leg playing baseball, he made a first comedy club appearance on a dare. It worked, and he began honing his routine as a variety show performer in Palm Desert, Calif., before touring the country as a banquet performer for business groups.

In 1995, Gans began a one-man show, "Danny Gans on Broadway: The Man of Many Voices," at the Neil Simon Theater in New York.

"A hardworking, eager-to-please entertainer who does rapid-fire imitations of show-biz personalities ranging from Tony Bennett to Al Pacino to Sarah Vaughan," AP Drama Critic Michael Kuchwara said of Gans in a review.

Gans' dexterity switching through the voices of John Travolta, Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield, Wayne Newton, Woody Allen, Robin Leach, Bill Cosby and others in "The Twelve Days of Christmas" impressed Kuchwara, who characterized Gans' humor as "the cozy comedy of ... nudge-nudge, wink-wink reaction."

Officials at Wynn Resorts, where Gans had performed four nights a week at the 1,500-seat Encore Theater since Feb. 10, and at The Mirage, where he performed from April 2000 to November 2008, said they were stunned by Gans' sudden death.

"The loss of Danny to his wife Julie, his children Amy, Andrew and Emily is at this moment impossible to comprehend," said Steve Wynn, who installed Gans as a headliner when he owned The Mirage and hired him again to perform at Encore, a sister property to the Wynn Las Vegas.

The large electronic marquee in front of the Encore posted Gans' photograph and the message: "Our friend forever, Danny Gans. 1956-2009."

Gans worked his way up in Las Vegas, after deciding to leave Broadway in 1997 to be closer to his family in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., Lightman said.

He became a headliner at the Stratosphere hotel-casino, and the next year went to the Rio hotel-casino before Wynn brought him to The Mirage on the Strip.

"This town allowed Danny to go home and be with his family every night and not be on the road," Lightman said. "That meant the world to him, it really did. And Las Vegas embraced him and made him a household name."

Gans held a pro-am golf tournament to raise money for the Danny Gans Junior Golf Academy, which finances golf programs for children, and helped raise some $250,000 to build the Lili Claire Family Resource Center to promote awareness of Williams Syndrome and other neurogenetic disorders and birth defects. Gans also hosted an annual 5K run and children's walk in Henderson to benefit the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation.

Lightman said Gans was excited in recent weeks about plans to shoot a music video to accompany a compact disc he was recording, using several voices to sing the song "What a Wonderful World," made famous by Louis Armstrong.

"It's got Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, George Burns as the voice of 'God,' Kermit the Frog, and closes with Louie Armstrong," Lightman said.

Lightman said it was among Gans' favorite songs.

"It was something he was so proud of," he said.

My wife and I are from New England and saw Danny in person in Los Angeles on Comic Strip Live while on vacation in 1989. He was relatively new but wowed everyone with his versatility. Years later, I got to see his Vegas show and was amazed at his performing skills. Sometimes the good, they do die young.

I am sorry I did not get a chance to see you perform in Las Vegas . But I was blessed to have you as a team mate when we we both played at Mt Sac for Coach Maz in Walnut Calif . You were bus travel entertainment for our away games with the various voices you did and kept the team on there toes to keep lose . My name is Ralph Beltran a pitcher who you invited at times to ride in your open dune buggy car to visit your apartment on Barranca Ave near IN and Out hamburger . My prayers and best wishes go out to your wife and 3 children .

Danny was such a strong presence that memories flood in this time of year until I realize why. His light burned so very brightly and I am so fortunate to have been able to share some of his moments. See you on the other side, Dan! And thanks for the occasional great golf shots. Never thought it hurt to channel you occasionally =).

For Danny...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...

Danny Gans, a fine entertainer and a fine human being, who was as human as all of us, a unique and inimitable presence who will rank with Elvis Presley, Liberace, Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, Siegfried and Roy,

My husband and I will never forget Danny Gans. We chose to attend his show IMMEDIATELY after our wedding in January 2001. It was a riot -- attending Danny's spectacular show AND attending it in my wedding gown! The audience wasn't sure if it was a stunt or not. Our sympathies to his loved ones, but also a message: Please do not grieve "sadly;" instead grieve "joyfully." I like to think Danny will be cracking jokes and having God in such a great mood that He will be pretty well disposed to overlook our little transgressions in the course of our lifetime -- by the time it will be our turn to go to heaven. Thank you, Danny.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...

I was so inspired and overjoyed to hear that Mr. Danny Gans was indeed a Christian man. How simply wonderful it is to know that he knew the Lord and was saved. When he passed he was absent from his body and present with the Lord. I smile when thinking what Danny is experiencing right now in the loving presence of Jesus! I can only imagine the joy †

I still cannot believe Danny passed. I saw him in 2000 when I used to live in Vegas. I loved him. He was my favorite entertainer. I thought he was the bomb!! He was fantastic...Heaven is an extra special place with Danny there now... My heart goes out to his family and children. Danny was the best of the best. They should dim the lights on the strip in memory of him... God bless you Danny. You were the cream of the crop. May you rest in peace.

i swear this is true, i saw danny gans, went to vegas to see him from ireland, loved his show,i was working on a new show myself for the irish theatres after danny inspired me as sammy inspired him, and i was driving a lady in a car on a long journey, doing a few of Dannys impressions, she loved it, and just then my cell phone beeped with a text message, Danny Gans is dead in Las Vegas, i felt very very sad, i treasure the dvd and the cd i bought at the mirage, i know he was christian and i believe Jesus will hold him in his arms,
i prayed for you at holy catholic mass tonight in my home town Danny, i bet your topping the bill on the strip again, only this time its in heaven.
REST IN PEACE.

A true fan.

For Danny

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

D Gans is who you are to me. An affable guy who loved to laugh and sing in high school. I will never forget our semester together in Boys Food class 1973 at Torrance High, you coming in singing the Four Tops, "Ain't no woman like the one I got". We actually liked it when you sang and you let us join just so you could mock us.

Me being the senior and you being the junior allowed me to keep you in line, and making you fall out of your chair laughing was my specialty.

When I happened through Vegas in 97', I rubbed my eyes twice looking at your ad on the back of almost every cab I saw, "D Gan's a headliner, where have I been to not have heard this?

Then it all made sense, you had it back then in school and you used that perfectionist approach and you made yourself a star. We always thought it would be baseball, not singing to be sure.

When I heard you loved Jesus, I smiled even more, because
your cohort in crime way back in the days of Boys Food also made a long journey to himself become a pastor.

It seems we both found the same road, and I can't wait to see you in glory so we can revel in finding Christ, and for some memories we shared as young men once.

God's speed D, may your family rest in the assurance of mortality being swallowed up by eternal life in Christ.

Until then always faithful.

Anytime we have company visit us here in Vegas, we are asked "what show would you recommend?" Always, and without hesitation, it would be "you must see Danny Gans." The response always seemed to be "who?" Most of my family and friends come from the East coast and I tell them, he's the best entertainer you've never heard of outside of Vegas! Without fail, these visitors come back feeling the same way I did about his show, so very impressed. It was a sad day for me, and this town, to learn of his untimely passing. Our prayers are with the family, and may they know how much Danny Gans touched our lives. God Bless.

Danny was a multi talented entertainer. We truly enjoyed his show. A remarkable person who always gave 250% of himself. The Las Vegas strip will not be the same. Kudo's to Steve Wynn who took Danny under his wings and allowed him to fly and become one of the greatest entertainers to grace the LV strip for so many years..Our deepest condolences to his wife, children, manager and band

Although i never got to meet Danny or see his show. From my family, to his family, we send our deepest sympathy .. He will be missed in Las Vegas .. We're from Hawai'i and always been meaning to see his show. May the Good Lord Bless and Take Care of Him In Heaven ..

Around 1990 I was talking with our then neighbor Chip Lightman about songs in commercials and his client Mary Wilson when he kept referring to "Danny." Needless to say, his client "Danny Who?" slowly evolved into a Vegas institution, his talent matched only by his personality. It was an honor to share the planet with this marvelous human being. To his family, having lost an older brother very suddenly under similar circumstances, I trust that over time your faith will provide you solace.

We saw Danny's last show and were so impressed with his talent, as well as with the fact that he seemed like such a nice guy. I could feel the commeraderie he felt with his band and he spoke so affectionately about his family. He even told 1500 of us that night about his faith...very commendable. The world will miss him.
