March 1987. Daryl and I met at Pathers Gym. All i could smell is sweat. It literally was a basement. 30 guys pumping iron. No ventilation. 2nd room was 3 dodge bags, 4 heavy bags. He had me punch away for days. I never got to know him. I was a teen away from home. (No support) I spent 1-1/2 hrs to come to the club. I got overwhelmed with the environment.

I just recently found out about Darryl’s passing.
He was my kickboxing and boxing coach and mentor. I remember him as a kind , gentle determined person who cared about the people around him .
Some memories include him teaching women’s self defence at panther and allowing 15 a 20 women take shots at him while he was wearing a full padded outfit .
There are also stories when he took on George laraque during an oilers training session . Never underestimate Daryl .
I appreciate what he taught me .
Sorry that he passed away so young.
Gerd .

Just finding this out now, I am saddened. He was many things to me. He always tried to do right. I am writing a book and his name came up in it, so I looked him up. Sad.

Darryl was my first boxing teacher. He was a kind, down to earth gentleman. His smile and kind heart will be missed. He taught me 25 years ago, and I still think of him from time to time. He was as humble as he was kind. May he rest in peace.

I am so saddened by the NOW knowledge of hearing of Daryl’s passing!
He was a tremendous man who was a coach and a mentor to me- I moved from Edmonton and did not know he passed- only Today I learned of this!
Daryl was such a coach, sparing teacher that if I missed a practice- he would call and check in-
Having the gym in the basement of a butcher shop, I still remember the smell- he kept costs down and if I couldn’t pay a months gym payment- he would just let me in and pay it off- he was a true great selfless man!
Being a female at Panthers Gym, he was a true advocate for women being part of the gym and being in the ring!.. he was a pioneer of females Working out and being fighters!... I have nothing but total respect for one of the best mentors in my life. I learned self confidence and strength that helped me gut through life and university to obtain my PhD- Daryl’s teaching were part of this and every time I share my time in the gym and the time we were sparing and he punched me- I spat blood and smiled, went after him hard- after we both laughed that he was, for the first time surprised and scared- he would never be scared but he gave me such confidence that I fought for years after in practice feeling strong and capable facing an opponentS-
You are a true coach, teacher and mentor-
You made this world a better place -
You will always be spoken about in true genuine kindness and I will miss you-

Decades have passed but I still remember the mentor Daryl was to me. He invited me to attend Karate with his son and was always supportive and caring. His patience and compassion (among many other admirable qualities) are surely missed.

I just found out about Daryl's passing.
I'm so sorry to be late adding my condolences. Daryl was one of the finest people I ever knew. He was also one of the kindest. I still tell people about him; he's become an exemplar of good character and courage in many discussions with my students.
Daryl really was one of a kind, and the world could surely use more like him.
God bless and keep his family.
