David Dore Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 13 to Apr. 14, 2016.
David Dore August 9, 1940 - April 8, 2016 DAVID MICHAEL DORE, B.A., B.Ed, C.A.E. Sadly we announce the passing of David on April 8th, 2016. He leaves behind his wife of 44 years and major supporter Carol, sons Chris (Shannon) and Paul, and grandchildren Joshua, Austin and Jaxson. In recent years, his three grandsons brought him much joy and happiness.

David waged a continuous effort in his professional life to see achievements in others and was blessed by the opportunity to pursue three successful careers as a teacher, trade organization executive and sport administrator. He worked with those in and around each of these careers to pursue at all times progress and excellence. Always passionate in his endeavours, David was happiest when he could observe success in others, especially the youth.

David served as President of the Canadian Figure Skating Association (now Skate Canada) and Director General during a time of tremendous growth in operational, commercial and financial periods of success. He retired from Skate Canada as one of the most decorated administrators and volunteers in Canadian sport and completed his years in skating as Vice President of the International Skating Union, becoming the first Canadian who served in this role.

As a testament to his contribution to sport and Canadian society, David was the recipient of many awards, among them Member of the Olympic Order, Honoured Member of Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, and recipient of three Governor General Awards.

Great appreciation goes to the staff of May Court Hospice for the comfort given to David and family. We will be forever grateful to Dr. Tucker for her special help and compassion. For those who wish, donations can be made to the Élisabeth Bruyère Hospital or Hospice Care Ottawa. As he requested, a private family service is being held.

It is hard to believe that three years has passed. I think of him often, remembering his quick wit and infectious smile!

I was so sorry to learn of David's passing this morning. He was a major presence in my life when we were young skaters and judges in our teens and 20's. I have such fond memories of bridge get-togethers, helping chaperone at a school dance and always, enjoying his wit, wisdom and keen observation of our human hearts. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Dear Carol, Paul, Chris, Shannon and kids,

Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel about David's passing. We send thoughts of sympathy and support to you as you begin your journey without him.

David brought so many gifts in to our lives - in to my life - we will never forget him. We share comfort in knowing that David is no longer suffering and is in a better place with old friends to keep him company.

David was a great leader - a visionary leader - in the sport of figure skating. I was very lucky to have worked alongside him at Skate Canada, as his assistant for 13 years, from 1988 until his retirement. Ironically, he told the story of deciding to retire on a specific evening in December - well, that happened to be an evening that Carol and David had been at our place for a Christmas get-together. I always wondered if it was the turkey that made him decide to retire!

We had some great times together and some not so great times together - I plan on remembering the great times. I can't really think of one story to share because there are so many.

Thinking back, David taught us all so much, and he taught me a lot in the 13 years that we worked together. I still carry a lot of those with me today - probably the need for perfectionism is the one that stands out the most!

"Time to Say Goodbye" has been playing in my mind a lot lately and it is time... Godspeed.

With sympathy,

Colleen and Jim Mackay

Carol, if I don't send this I'll regret it just as we regret losing touch with you both (even though David would have had to remind you who we are). David taught us History at Silverthorn. He was one of those special kind of teachers you really liked and appreciated. We reconnected several years after when we ran into you both in the Tampa airport. You came to our wedding which was shortly after that, we had dinner at your place in Mississauga when Chris and Paul were probably 6 and 4. We lost touch when you moved to Gloucester and then let life get in the way as they say. Unfortunately, David will never know the countless times we have thought of him with fond memories. Please know you how special we thought he was and that you are in our thoughts during this very difficult time.

I first met David when he came to teach at GGMSS in Mississauga. i always enjoyed his brilliant wit, and warm friendship. He took me along to Lake Placid to the Olympics many years ago, a wonderful experience I shall never forget. I was in touch throughout the years and applauded his contributions to figure skating along the way. He will be missed by all who knew him. Nancy Newton

I had the honour and pleasure of working with David at CFSA and Skate Canada from 1988 until he joined the ISU. David's vision for the organization was leaps and bounds ahead of its time, his work ethic impeccable and his love and respect for the sport and the athletes unmatched. He was, simply put, the best leader this sport has ever had and I feel privileged that I was able to know and work with him. My deepest sympathies Carol, Chris and Paul on your loss.

Worked with David (Mr Dore) at originally CFSA 1987 to 2005. It was obvious to me from day one Figure Skating was his passion. A visionary who had a pure goal and that was to bring our Canadian skaters to the top and proudly showcase them. I have to say that Skate Canada office was at its best potential when he reigned the title of Director General . I will never forget the opportunities you gave me and many others in the office. Rest in peace Mr. Dore. My thoughts and prayers go out to you Carol and the boys...

David,
I remember you giving me your Hat when you challenged me to win the Pairs Eventin 1984. I did and I still have the hat. I did not always agree with your choices but what you achieved is the reason Skate Canada is what it is today. Thank you for what you did for me and the Skating World. RIP David

My memories of David are those of a child. He was my next door neighbour in St. Catharines, Ontario. I remember when he contracted polio and how it affected his one leg. I recall that figure skating was the sport that helped him to restore strength to his limbs. He had unfailing determination in his quest to get better and his reward was his excellence in the sport. His mother was his greatest supporter and sometimes she would ask me to accompany her in going to watch David practise at an arena in Port Colbourne. It is a fond memory from my childhood. As a little girl, I was in awe of the various skating moves that he performed; and I am sure that these memories fuelled my love of watching this sport on TV to this day.
There is no doubt that David's contribution to this sport has been monumental and he will not be forgotten.
My condolences to the family.

If it wasn't for David Dore I would never have been able to take time off from school to train. He spent 4 hrs a week tutoring me on subjects that I would have for the following school yr. He always made me laugh and I loved that he was honest about how he thought I was doing. He'd often sit beside my mom during the summer at the cricket and I could see through the foggy glass windows that they were laughing. He will be missed but I will cherish the memories.

Heaven just became an even better place with David's presence. Somehow it is so easy to see BA Scott in her full length mink and David so proud in his Canadian Figure Skating (sorry Skate Canada) World Team outfit organizing the the Reception and Team Dinner for all of Canada's Heavenly Skating Team. David will give the opening speech and no doubt will choke back tears as he re lives all of the great skating moments of the last 50 years. Barbara Ann will look so elegant and David's dear friend Bob Howard will be welcoming all of the guests. Toller in his most outlandish outfit will be holding court, Johnny Esaw will be announcing for the television coverage, Sheldon will be discussing technique with Hellmut, Barb Graham will be critiquing the event and David will be frantically calling back to earth for direction from Joyce Hisey on the seating plan.
Canadian figure skating will be forever grateful for David's vision and dedication. He was a wonderful leader and inspiration for so many wonderful young skaters and coaches.
God be with you David.

I last met him at Silverthorn Collegiate's 10th anniversary celebrations in 1974. He will not be forgotten by the many people who knew him.
