David Frey Obituary

Published by Chicago Tribune on Feb. 28, 2016.
David I Frey Sr. of Palatine, IL passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at the age of 80. David was born to parents William and Cora Kammerer Frey on May 27th, 1935 at St Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL. He grew up on Hastings Street in Evanston as the youngest of seven children, went to Evanston High School, and attended college at UIUC. In 1959 he married Jean Bickford, also of Evanston and the couple had three children. In 1963 the family moved to 5th & Linden in Wilmette where David worked in sales at Rust Oleum for several years, and later in flooring-sales and at a trucking company. A friend to all animals he was especially fond of horses. Upon retirement in 2,000 he became a regular volunteer at Horsefeathers Therapeutic Riding in Lake Forest where he, and the horses helped children with physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. As a youth he was a very competitive swimmer who won several races and medals swimming his signature stroke; the Butterfly. A lifelong fan of the Chicago Blackhawks, David also enjoyed camping, boating, waterskiing, and other outdoor activities, he often traveled to California, Florida, Nevada, and frequently Wisconsin, where he enjoyed himself at, (and in), Green Lake. David was an excellent photographer, a trophied league bowler, and liked to work with his hands, making furniture, working on cars, and fixing things. Later in life he made several treks to Indy, Daytona, and elsewhere to attend major car racing events. His family and friends will sorely miss his fun spirit and generous nature. David is survived by his three children; Daniel Frey, Katy White, and Dave Frey, his sister; Marilyn Midday, his grandchildren; Kyle and Jason White, Emma and Carly Frey, and Jack and Michael Frey, his great-grandchildren; Elyse and Anna White, and many beloved nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He is preceded in death by his parents; William and Cora Frey, his sisters; Dorothy Wise and Eleanor Bement, and his brothers; William, Robert, and John Frey. Cremation took place on February 22nd and per his wishes there will be no public service or memorial. If inclined the family requests that remembrance be made in his name to Horsefeathers Therapeutic Riding;http://horsefeatherscenter.org/index.php/2011-10-31-15-33-33.
