David Hathaway Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 18 to Dec. 20, 2016.
Hathaway MD, David S.

David Samuel Hathaway, MD, 81, of Waupaca, Wisconsin died quickly and without pain at his home on December 15, 2016. Dad/Dave/David lived a rich and wonderful life. David dedicated himself to three things: caring and providing for his family, nurturing the well-being of his patients and friends, and reveling in the affection of his English Springer Spaniels (currently, Happy, Val and Tina).

David was born in Superior, Wisconsin on September 22, 1935, to George J. and Letitia E. Hathaway. He was the younger brother of Robert G. (Patricia, deceased) Hathaway, MD (Conroe, TX) and Walter R. (Sandra) Hathaway, MD (deceased; Beaumont, TX). David graduated from Waupaca High School, Lawrence University, the University of Edinburgh (on a Fulbright Fellowship), and Baylor University-College of Medicine, earning high academic honors throughout his studies. After completing a residency at the Mayo Clinic in Internal Medicine and Nephrology, David first worked for the Public Health Service and then practiced medicine as an Internist, primarily in Neenah, Wisconsin, for 30 years. David was a devoted physician, first and foremost, and cared well and deeply for his patients. In addition, he also held a number of leadership positions in the Riverside/Nicolet/LaSalle Clinic and in the National Kidney Foundation. He was proud to have established one of the first kidney dialysis centers in central Wisconsin and was grateful for the nurses and patients he worked with there. In 1995, he retired and returned to his hometown of Waupaca and, for several years, co-taught a medical ethics class at Lawrence University, an institution which he credits for significantly shaping his aspirations and accomplishments. He was active in numerous organizations in Waupaca--most notably, Winchester Academy, Waupaca Rotary Breakfast Club and St. Mark's Episcopal Church, where he found a community of like-minded spiritual seekers and friends.

David met his spouse, soulmate and intellectual superior, Lenna M. (Remmel) Hathaway, also of Waupaca (deceased 12/21/2005) in eighth grade. The two married on December 29, 1960 and had three children: George J. Hathaway, DDS; William R. (Sharon) Hathaway, MD; and Heather A. (Jay Johnson) Hathaway, PhD. David and Lenna were also blessed with six kind and caring grandchildren: Sarah, Meghan and Will Hathaway (Asheville, NC), Hannah and Sophie Hathaway (Dale, WI), and David John Hathaway Rothfels (Milwaukee, WI).

After Lenna died in 2005, David met another love, Mary Ellen (Danielsen) Boario, with whom he enjoyed laughing, socializing and traveling the Chain-O-Lakes for the last decade of his life. Please keep Mary Ellen, her siblings, and her children in your thoughts and prayers.

David is further survived by four nieces and nephews, a brother-in-law, Fr. Bill Remmel, S.D.S. (Tuscon, AZ); and a cousin, Tom Ziebell (Appleton, WI). He will also be dearly missed by Nigel Rothfels (Milwaukee, WI); Steven (Amy) Reilly (Neenah, WI); and life-long best friend, Charles (Chuck) Merry (Appleton, WI).

A Celebration of David's Life will be on Wednesday, December 21 at 11 AM at Holly Funeral Home in Waupaca. Visitation will be on Wednesday morning from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the funeral home. David will be laid to rest next to his wife, Lenna at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations in David's honor to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Winchester Academy, Waupaca or to the National Kidney Foundation.

Dave was a standout guy in every possible respect! We met in 1952, as "citizens" at/of Badger Boys State, then held annually at Ripon College.
His radiant smiles and outgoing personality endeared him to all who met and knew him. We lost you far too soon, Dave

I met Dave as a high school junior, when we were both "citizens" of Badger Boys State, representing our respective high schools. Our friendship continued, and flourished, through all his years. We lost David, a remarkable and outstanding man, far too soon. We love, admire, and miss you, Dave.

I met Dave when we trained to become hospice pet therapy volunteers through Theda Care. I, as the area coordinator, spent many joyful hours working with my dog, Max, and Dave's dog, Happy ,as we joined our fellow volunteer's visiting special hospice patient's. Dave especially found great joy participating in Waupaca's volunteer reading program's where we visited area elementary schools and libraries listening to children read to our dogs. I can see Dave sitting on a chair, Happy lying on the floor, and a beautiful child reading intently to the both of them. I saw God smiling often as Dave and Happy went about their mission of passionate volunteerism and especially fostering reading confidence to many children.

What a loss! Not too long ago, David was my Big Brother in Beta Theta Pi. I felt he was the one person I most admired, and was fortunate to have him as a friend for many years thereafter. His accomplishments and friendships were things that we all admire. For several years we had been talking about meeting at his home, in an area I knew well as a young boy. This is another example of the loss we experience by "putting things off".
My sincere best wishes to the many family members and friends who also feel deeply the loss of this great guy.

Dave was an amazingly smart, generous, and kind friend whom I met through Edie Oberley, my business partner and fellow volunteer for the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin (NKFW). He also had a wonderful, wicked sense of humor and a sense of fun as we NKFW volunteers worked to educate kidney patients and provide needed services. Always smiling, always wise, Dave was a leader in both his profession and his volunteer work. I shall never forget him, his love for his family, and how he helped Edie and me in our business. A true and good friend in all the 25+ years I knew him. Requiescat in Pace.

I worked with Dr. Hathaway at the La Salle Clinic. He was a perfectionist that brought out the best in those of us that had the privilege of working with him. Truly a man to be admired. His kindness and gentleness will never be forgotten. My sympathy to all of his family and friends.

I met David after Mary Ellen told me how special he was to her. I immediately saw why she adored him....his kindness and great smile made me comfortable with him from the minute I met him. He was a wonderful man who will be missed by many.

Dave had many admirers as a caring and thoughtful physician. Along with providing health care to his many patients, he was also a prolific writer. He had the support of his family as he involved himself with the community. After his retirement he and his friend Mary Ellen researched and wrote the history of Waupaca. He will be remembered as a great man.

I met Dave through Winchester Academy. He was Executive Director and I was treasurer. He was one of my favorite people in Waupaca and was proud to consider him my friend. Dave was friends with my father and mother and when my Dad passed away, I enjoyed talking to Dave about their high school escapades. My condolences to Mary Ellen and her family and Dave and Lenna's children and grandchildren. I will miss him.

Dave was a great doc (I know that from others) but more than that, a great and delightful friend. I learned that most directly during a wonderful three week trip with him to Alaska. May neat experiences, but possibly the best was a visit to a dogsled camp. Got a ride on a wheeled sled behind a bunch of dogs straining like hell to go faster. I was having fun but Dave was in heaven.

Rest in peace Dave with Lenna and your dogs who went before you.

Dave was one of the great ones--not just as a doctor (which I know only from others)--but as a delightful and caring friend. I leaned the latter while spending three fabulous weeks on a trip to Alaska with him. Many delightful moments during the trip but a huge highlight was visiting a dogsled camp and riding a wheeled sled (no snow yet, thank goodness). I was having a great time, but Dave was in heaven.

We'll all miss him greatly. My deepest sympathies to the family.
