David Haymon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Dec. 21 to Dec. 23, 2016.
David Robertson Haymon passed away peacefully on Monday, December 19, 2016, at the age of 65. David was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he graduated from University High School, before going on to earn his bachelor's degree and law degree from LSU. A long-time champion of the underdog, David focused his legal practice on doing pro bono work in order to help people and make a positive impact on the world. He married the love of his life, Marie-Louise, with whom he had three beautiful children - Veronique, Charles and Philippe - and considered them the greatest achievements of his life. David had a big appetite for life and never met a stranger. He had an incredible sense of humor. He was very social, loved lively discussions, was an avid reader, and had a curious mind and a deep thirst for knowledge, especially when it came to science. He also loved scuba diving, music, movies and traveling, and was an accomplished photographer, taking wedding photos to help support himself during his schooling, before continuing to pursue the craft as a hobby, most notably as a publicity photographer for the New Orleans Opera. After moving on to cinematography, David was in the middle of a major film project when he sustained a massive intracranial hemorrhage. He went on to live another 16 years, primarily confined to a wheelchair, and later, to a bed, but he never abandoned his love for his family and for life in general. Never complaining, David strived to the end to make others happy. We know he is in a better place now, though he will be dearly missed. David was preceded in death by his parents, Odis and Gwendolyn Haymon, his sister, Bliss Haymon, and his brother, Doug Broussard. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dr. Marie-Louise Haymon, his daughter, Dr. Veronique Robins-Brown (along with her husband, Peter Robins-Brown) and his sons, Charles and Philippe. David is also survived by his sisters Rebecca Collins (and her husband, Robert Collins), of Baton Rouge, Gay Landaiche (and husband Pierre Landaiche), of Memphis, Tennessee, Fran Heaton (and her husband Dr. John Heaton), of Madisonville, and his brother, Charles Gamble (and his wife, Jennifer Gamble) of Bakersfield, California. David's surviving nephews and nieces include Caroline Landaiche, Nathan Gamble, and Hunter, Houston and Ann Cheney Bates. The visitation will be held on Friday, December 23, at Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, on Pontchartrain Boulevard, in New Orleans, from 5-8 p.m. There will be a mass on Monday, December 26, at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Abbey in Covington, with burial on the Abbey's grounds immediately afterward. Father Tom Condon, head of the Southern Dominican Province, will be officiating the burial mass. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to the American Stroke Foundation, the New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC), or a charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to David's physician, Dr. David Myers, the Touro Neuro Rehabilitation Center, Our Lady Of Wisdom Healthcare Center - particularly nurse Deborah - and Javier, David's caregiver for many years, as well as countless other people who have been involved in David's care over the years. May God bless you all.

Trust that you've been able to treasure those good memories of David while journeying on with your lives making new memories. I will always remember his love for photography, astronomy, anything to do with science and especially physics, as well as telling a funny story, and being so proud of his family.

I have great memories of David going on his first Dove Hunt with us along the Mexican border in South Texas when he was a teenager. I also remember the time when David was in law school and quite a good photographer that I hired him to take some pictures for me in a case that was going to trial. In the wee hours of the morning before the trial, I was awakened by the sound of something rattling around and bumping the side door of my house. I could see through the glass door in the darkness a large man who seemed to be trying to open the door. I thought it might be a burglar. I considered arming myself, but then decided to simply flash the kitchen light on and off to scare the robber away. Sure enough, he jumped down off the porch and drove away. When I went outside to check, I realized that it had been David arranging still wet photographs for my trial on my porch. It was a good lesson in thinking twice before aiming a gun through a glass door at a presumed burglar.

I also remember how bravely David and Marie Louise and their children faced his affliction. I have the greatest admiration for all of you.

I am so sorry to hear of David's passing. David was truly a giving, caring, intelligent, gentleman. His mother was my high school teacher in both the 11th and 12th grade. And so I had the good fortune to meet first meet David when he was in the eight grade. So I was there to watch him grow up through all phases of his life. I have so many memories of him over the years, and he became such a part of me. My life was enriched by knowing him. Rest in peace dear David.

My dear brother..no so much more, my friend, my mentor. You were always there for me. When D.D. died you took me under your wing..you included me in every activity of your life. From our late night chats at Gweny's house to watching sci-fi movies and eating sushi you were truly a big brother to me. Thank you for letting me hang out with you and your beautiful family all these years..making the movie, hunting, working with you in New Orleans. We had so many good moments. I miss you Davie O Davie. I know you are resting in the Lord now and that he will reunite us shortly. Come quickly Jesus and bring my David with you. I pray that I can share your love, humor, intelligence and warm hospitality with others as you shared with me. Be at peace my dear brother.

Sometimes words can not express enough about the pain that we are experiencing. I pray that soon we will get to see the day when pain will be no more and that kingdom that Jesus said we should pray for to come on earth as it has in heaven. May the God of comfort be with you and your family at this most difficult time.
