David Joiner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2005.

JOINER, SR., David Bishop David Joiner, Sr. entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 10, 2005. Bishop David Joiner, Sr. G.Th.D.D. was born on September 28, 1927 to the late Ernest Joiner, Sr. and the late Juanita Freeman-Joiner, one brother Ernest Joiner Jr., and two sisters Clara Hazelton-Joiner and Mary Francis Joiner-Williams (Willie). He was thought fondly of by Rev. J.T. Thomas and Mrs. Thomas and they played a great part in his early life. Bishop Joiner graduated from Burke High School in the year of 1941. Bishop Joiner received an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army, He attended the City College of New York and later graduated from Claflin College in Orangeburg, SC in 1967. He received his ministerial degree from the American Bible College in Chicago. In 1959 he was consecrated to Bishop. Bishop David Joiner and distinguished Mother Dorothy L. Joiner was united in Holy Matrimony for over fifty years and out of that Holy Union six children were born and raised in an angelic home of love. He met Mother Dorothy Joiner in Beaufort, SC and was married on December 9, 1950. At the age of fourteen, Bishop Joiner as he related it, got an urge for ministry , and began preaching on soap boxes and corners in his Charleston eastside neighborhood. He would preach to anybody who would listen, especially children. He would read the Bible, sing, clap, shout preach and sing some more. Bishop Joiner hosted several radio broadcasts on WOKE radio, WBUG 1430 radio, WKQB/WQIZ radio, WRIT radio, WPAL radio and Gospel WJNI, the Chief Apostle also did several television broadcasts on WPRW TV, Chicago, WCIV TV, WCSC TV, and WCBD TV, Charleston, South Carolina. Bishop Joiner was the first to pioneer radio for others to have the chance today to become known names. For many years Bishop and Mother Joiner sought for a day when they could help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ worldwide and the day came, Wednesday, March 10, 1976, when Old Fashioned Praise Time was first recorded at Greater Joiner Temple, by the cameras of WCBD, Channel 2, a revelation of a dream was birthed. The program aired Sunday March 14, 1976 on Channel 2 at 10:00 a.m. God continued to bless Bishop Joiner and Greater Joiner Temple by providing them with their very own television equipment and recording devices. Thousands upon thousands of people have testified about being blessed through his radio and television broadcasts. His flock, which he calls the Happy Apostolic Family , the United Community Church of God in Christ spreads across the entire Lowcountry and abroad. He is the Chief Apostle and founder of the United Community Church of God in Christ. In 1977 a front page article in the Local News section of the News and Courier's Sunday edition called God's Showman said according to the Arbitron ratings, 22,000 people in the Lowcountry watched his Old Fashioned Praise Time at 10 a.m. on Sundays on WCBD TV, only Oral Roberts national show reached more area people, 24,000 according to the ratings. Bishop David Joiner leaves to hold dear his memories, a devoted and loving wife, Mother Dorothy L. Joiner and children: Sonja Joiner-Lee (Evans) David Joiner, Jr., Juanita E. Joiner, Byron Joiner (deceased), Elder Darryl E. Joiner, Cheryl E. Joiner, eight notable grandchildren, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Professional service entrusted to the staff of North Area Funeral Home, 4784 Gaynor Ave., North Charleston, SC 29405; (843)744-7511. To the family of Bishop David Joiner, I would like to express my condolence to you. Bishop David Joiner was a friend as well as a Pastor. My mother Evang. Lorine Cox was a memeber of his church. But she went home as well, to be with the lord. I will always be grateful for the kindness that was shown toward my mother during the time she was under his leadership. I just want to say to the family, Don't cry, because God only takes the best.

May God bless and keep each and everyone of you in his tender care.

Dear Mother Joiner and Family:

We are sadden to learn of the untimely passing of Bishop. My family and I did get to visit with Bishop while we were in Charleston mid July. He gave us some words of wisdom on that visit and we are very happy that we were able to see him one more time. With our deepest symphaty, we wish you God's peace and strength during this time. Take consolation that the Bishop is now in a place of deserved rest. May God be with you all.

To the Joiner Family, we share in your loss. We know to lose such an annointed man of God, such as Bishop Joiner is not only a great loss to you but to this world, because he has touched so many lives, including my family (starting with Mother Mary Jenkins). But now we can still rejoice because he has now gone on to be with the Lord. As the Apostle Paul said, "To live is Christ and to die is gain". Our prayers are with you all.

To the Joiner family, truely a great Father, teacher,an icon, and a One of a kind man of God has gone home to be with the lord. I remember as a young man traveling a distance to church with my grandmother (The Late Mother C Haskell) to see this man of God not knowing it would be my first foundation in The Lord. I look back and I will "Never Forget To Remember" Where first God and Bishop Joiner's teaching has brought my family and I from. So my advise to you Mother Joiner and family is be encouraged "Wait on the Lord:be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord." Psalm 27:14 and "Never Forget To Remember" Bishop Joiner's teaching and his love.... God Bless You In Jesus Name.. Yours In Christ Brother Javone Woodard and The Haskell Family.

Love's greatest gift is Remembrance, and the family will have a lot of them to share. Ever since I can recall, Elder Joiner has been a "legend" delivering the message of Christ -- now he can deliver them in "person" to the Master. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. May God continue to Bless all of you!

Rev. Jake and Jonetta Lee, Jr.

August 12, 2005

Dear Mother Joiner, Sonja, Nita, David Jr. and Elder Darrel truly our hearts are sadden over the loss of Bishop Joiner. He was a noted Christian pioneer of television and radio who was not afraid to preach the gospel. We thank God for Bishop and his teaching. Many of us were saved under his leadership and preaching.

We will always remember Bishop's words of wisdom, "Always be kind to people on your way up the ladder, you will meet those same people on your way coming down." We love you and will keep you in our prayers. To God Be the Glory!

I was extremely distressed to learn of the Bishop's recent demise. I watched his TV program on Sunday's in the 70's, and have often mentioned his name in the years after. He had a quote that has followed me throughout the years. It was, "be kind to those you meet on your way up, because you may meet them again on your way down". May Bishop Joiner rest in the loving arms of our Father in Heaven. My prayers are with his family and friends as they mourn his passing.
