David Murnane Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 7, 2020.
David W. Murnane Sr., 97 years old of Havertown PA David W. Murnane, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend died on March 7, 2020, at 97 years of age. David was born in Columbus Ohio and became the oldest of 12 children. He graduated from St. Charles Borromeo High School in Columbus, and served as a Corporal in the Army Air Corp from 1941 to 1945 where he worked as an engine mechanic for B-52 and B-24 Bombers. David married his beloved Teresa M. Wetzel on June 9, 1945. They were together for 59 years until her death on June 22, 2004, and together they had 8 children who produced 48 grandchildren who produced 74 great-grandchildren and counting. The last of which, Francis Timothy Piselli, was born on March 6th, the day before he died. They moved to Philadelphia in 1953 and he worked as a merchandising executive for the Strawbridge and Clothier department store chain until his retirement in 1987. David died in that same home after 67 years there. He and we, moved heaven and earth to make that happen. David was a fervent Catholic and active as a choir member at Annunciation BVM parish in Havertown for many years. He was famous for the after-midnight-mass celebrations at his home thereafter on Christmas and Easter which ended late in the early morning. He attended retreats at Malvern Retreat House for almost 50 years and passed that tradition down through the next three generations who still attend each year with the Knights of the Immaculata in November. David made lists of relatives each year that had died and had masses said for them. He had a great sense of humor and loved to play golf. One of his golfing buddies was an atheist. Dad would debate him about the morality of abortion which Dad abhorred. Dad never stopped praying for him and one day, when a certain flower bloomed, he felt sure that fellow had converted to Christ. David loved classical music, history, and mystery novels and was a master woodworker, making most of his dining room and bedroom furniture. He made acts of woodworking-kindness to many people including but not limited to, his children and grandchildren. He helped on many home building and home-addition projects along the way for his ever-expanding family. David was quite a character and many a story will be told. We invite you to join us for his celebration funeral. He never stopped asking his children and grandchildren to pray for his soul after he would die and he will never stop praying for them in eternity. He will not be forgotten. Family: Deceased daughter Maureen spouse of Bruce Smith; son, Timothy J. Murnane and spouse Mary Jane (Keul) of Warrington; son, Michael P. Thoughts and prayers to the whole family. I was at your house one time with my Mom and I saw the dining set your Dad had made. I was so impressed with that talent even at such a young age.

Mr. Murnane was a great role-model and father-figure. I enjoyed seeing him every year during retreat at St. Joseph's in the Hills, Malvern with the Our Lady of Fatima men's retreat group. I will miss him. I and my wife Cecilia will ask the Carmel Sisters (and our daughter Sister Maria Regina of Jesus, OCD) to pray for the repose of David's soul. We will also request Holy Mass(es) for David of the FSSP priestly order. Requiem aeternum dona eis, Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen.

To All the Murnane's, so so sorry to hear about your Dad. He was a gentle, fun-loving giant. I still use to see him and Michael at good old Annunciation BVM on Sunday's. Recently though I haven't seen them. I have so many fond memories of hanging at the Murnane's. Please know you are all in my prayers. Rosemary (Craig)
