To My Brother Dave,

I try to think about how happy Mom and Dad are to see you. I try to think about how happy you are to see them. I try to think these things . . . but, instead, I keep thinking about how much I miss you already . . . my "little" brother, my best friend.

To Karen and the whole Klausing Family,

There is often talk of our going to a "better place" one day. Your love had Dave more than half-way to heaven before he ever left us. Thank you all for being the wonderful family that you are.

Mary Elizabeth, James, and Catherine,

Your Dad could not have been more proud of you three ( . . . and I have the e-mails to prove it). Where ever life's journey takes you, please remember that you have an Uncle Mike who loves you.

I knew him only through stories and relayed phone call conversations from James. But because James talked to him and about him so much I might as well have known him personally. He'd relay things to me through James about Trinity football and even said that one day he'd get me job if I ever felt like returning to Louisville. Well Dave, when I finally do return I'll make sure to drop by fabled Trinity H.S. and catch a game or two for ya.

It's hard to measure or explain the loss of someone with such a big heart, someone whose spirit was so generous that it reached people without even trying.

Dave's loss leaves a huge void for me personally; I can only imagine how much bigger void for his family and loved ones. I already find myself looking around, wanting to find him, talk with him, share my day with him. I know that the kids I work with were struck very deeply and painfully by his loss, because they, too, intuitively know what he was about.

All the best, Dave. We love and miss you.

To the Family of 'Big Dave',
He always had a smile on his face, always. Our prayers are with each of you.

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again" (Luke 6:38).

Dave certainly was a giver.

Karen and Family:
I am writing to express the deepest sympathy of all of us who are together on vacation this week and can't be there to comfort you and Dave's family. We all will remember him as a great guy and someone who brought such happiness to you. 49 is way too young to die, but Dave made an impression on so many people. And we all know that our time here on earth is precious. Our love and prayers are with you and all of your family. Remember that each day that goes by, you will be one day closer to being with Dave again forever.
