Years ago when David was still in the Valdese Fire Dept. John and I were at Thompson Realty. I think David was helping us find our first home. Suddenly John and David's pagers went off- it was like seeing two hunting dogs catching a scent. Both men sat up straight, their eyes got that much brighter, almost quivering with adrenalin. The address went out and both left me sitting there like a shot. It probably wasn't long after that that we bought our first home. On move in day David brought us a bucket of chicken and the fixins. He was an awesome man.

Colene, Ronnie & Family,

I read with much regret the MNH account of David's untimely death. Although I did not know him personally, I do remember him as a child. Based on his obituary, he was a wonderful, loving and caring individual faithfully serving on the behalf of his family and the Valdese community. My thoughts and prayers will be with you at this very sad moment in time.

I was saddened to see that David had passed away. I only knew him in high school. However, it is somewhat amazing to me that I can go all the way back to 1973 and remember this man's kindness. There are some people that you could just be in there presence and they made your day better. He was always so funny and happy. The Lord blessed him with a joyful heart. This was so David could bless others with his joy. Someone wrote on their memory that David preached his own funeral. What an amazing statement. God's Speed to you David Thompson, you are safe in the arms of Jesus. To David's family I can only tell you to lean into God's presence as he carries you though this tremendous loss.

David, was a man who paid his dues to society well over what most have done. He was intertwined in the lives of all in this community, in many ways. As well as his achievements mentioned he helped people find the home of their dreams and to keep their lives and businesses in order financially, with the IRS. We will truely miss his devotion and dedication to help us in all our lives succeed throughout these past years. "Cobb" was kind, caring, helpful and dedicated to everyone in some way throughout this community. We will truely miss his presence. David was a legacy in the town of Valdese that will not be forgotten. My condolences to Debbie-his wife, his children-Andy and Bethany, and extended family members for their loss. God be with you all in this time of grieving David's passing.

April 18, 2016

David's unexpected passing was quite a shock to me, as I'm sure it was to everyone else.

While he was initially "just" our tax preparer, we ALWAYS looked forward to meeting with him to do our taxes! How many can say they LOOKED FORWARD to tax time? David-as those who knew him can verify-was SO easy to talk with and a great conversationalist. Being that I am also a talker (!) we ALWAYS "ran over" our appointment times (I'll bet everyone else can relate to this also!) And-for the record-David knew EVERYONE!

On our most recent tax appointment a couple months back we had discussed trying to attend some bluegrass concerts together and had traded emails. I still have email IN MY INBOX from David! You knowthat is a reminder how quickly we can pass from this world to the next.

Among the people I have talked with about David since his passing was Chief Jack Moss of Valdese PD. We shared experiences and talks we had with David and Chief Moss summed David Thompson's legacy of service and friendship-that he was the epitome of a "great citizen" and one of the finest men we knew.

While I really didn't know David's family other than Ronnie, I would like to tell them that my wife and I hope you guys find some sort of way of dealing with this TREMENDOUS loss, and please know that David will NOT be forgotten. He had influence on many and found a way to be a blessing to so many people. I'm sure the suddenness of his passing, the great void you now find in your hearts and lives, and the stress of the service planning has been overwhelming, but just be assured that he was not taken for granted-he really was a great man.

My heart goes out to you all, and I know I am not alone when I say prayers are with you. A measure of a man is in the kindnesses and the willingness to do for others, and in those respects, the goodness David did for so many will stand as his legacy.
