David Underwood Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 10, 2013.
Before his passing Feb. 8, 2013, David Underwood. of Muscle Shoals, forged a 78-year-old trail of laughter, generosity and compassion. He faced his long-term illness with dignity and courage.
A lifelong resident of Colbert County, David graduated from Mars Hill Bible School where he sang in the quartet. After graduation, David joined the Army serving in Paris where he earned Cosmic Top-Secret security clearance. After the Army, he began a long career in sales ultimately creating his own advertising business.
As a younger man, David coached pee wee football, rode motorcycles with his son and was the voice of Muscle Shoals football, announcing Trojan games for over 30 years. In his later years, he enjoyed growing tomatoes, watching Alabama football, caring for his beloved dogs and playing guitar and harmonica in several local bands. He will be remembered as a mentor and role model to many for his 20 years of service on the Muscle Shoals Civil Service Board. One of the all-time great practical jokers, David's sense of humor was unforgettable. In short, he had a terrific life!
David leaves his wife Charlotte; daughter, Karla Turner (David); son, Greg (Lisa); four grandchildren, David III, Will and Charlotte Turner and Elizabeth Underwood, and countless friends.
Funeral services will be held at Colbert Memorial Chapel. The family will greet friends from noon-2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, with the service beginning at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Jack Wilhelm, Brother Larry Kilpatrick and Brother Don McGuyer . Charlotte, Karla & Greg,,,,,,,
So sorry to hear of David's passing. Death is something we are never ready to accept of our loved ones, but something we all must deal with when time comes. It will be 5 years tomorrow, 2/17/08, since we lost our Mother, David's sister, and not a day goes by I don't think of her, and her sweet smiling face. You too will have all of these wonderful memories of your husband & dad. Memories are the only thing that can't be taken away. I know David left you with many. Take care and know that you are definately in our thoughts.

Greg,

Having lost both may parents I know how tough it is. Death is a part of life. It just happens to be something
that is difficult to prepare for. All of us are different, and because of that no two people grieve the same. While grieving is normal, so is healing and it is comforting to know that while many may be grieving today, healing from the grief will follow.

From talking to you it sounds like your father touched the lives of many people. Having said that, it is obvious that people are not paying tribute to your father because he died. They are doing so because he lived and he obviously enriched many of the lives of those who knew him.

I eulogized my own father 10 years ago and closed with a poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye. The poem is called Do Not Stand by my Grave and Weep.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am in a thousand winds that blow,
I am the softly falling snow.

I am the gentle showers of rain,
I am the fields of ripening grain.

I am in the morning hush,
I am in the graceful rush
Of beautiful birds in circling flight,
I am the starshine of the night.

I am in the flowers that bloom,
I am in a quiet room.

I am in the birds that sing,
I am in each lovely thing.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there. I do not die.

Yes Greg, your father has been called to his final home, and while he may no longer be with the family in the flesh
he will be forever with you in his spirit.

The Campbell Family is thinking about you and praying for the strength of your family during this difficult time.

David was such a special person. I was always impressed how he boosted others, how he wanted them to be uplifted. I only knew him briefly but was totally in awe and apprciation of him. Kind regards, Doris Gallaher
