David Vaughan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2017.
David Charles Vaughan passed away October 29th, 2017. Born September 26th, 1937, and raised in Troy, Pennsylvania, David was the fourth of seven children by Margaret Darden and Evan James Vaughan. He was a graduate of Troy High School, Paris Island and Mansfield College. After his time in his beloved Marine Corps he worked as a high school history teacher where he met the love of his life, Layola Jean Miller. They were soon married and raised four children together, David Jr., John Winston, Lance Patrick and Thomas Michael.

David moved seamlessly from teaching to a successful business career with Atlantic Richfield and Lyondell Petrochemical that took full advantage of his skill set: people and problem solving. The job also allowed for a lot of golf, though that was done perhaps less skillfully. The Vaughan clan lived on both coasts through the years, in multiple states, as David himself filled out several passports traveling the world for work. In 1985, "Dave and Jean" settled in what would become their adopted hometown of Houston, Texas, where they remained together ever since.

He will be remembered for his loyalty, his impeccable storytelling, and his love of history. He had the most fun when he was making others laugh and had a lifelong talent to do just that. But most of all he will be remembered for his devotion to his family. He and Jean celebrated fifty-five years of marriage this year. His love and support of his children knew no bounds, no matter the path they chose. He raised a businessman, a United States Marine and police officer, along with artists and writers.

David passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. His devoted wife, their four sons, brothers and sisters, grandchildren, close friends and nieces were all there. He was a beloved man and he lived a long, full life. The amount of people he touched through the years, whether through a quick smile, a joke, or his seemingly unending generosity, is incalculable.

He is preceded in death by his mother Margaret Vaughan, and his brother Thomas Darden Vaughan. He will be deeply missed, remembered and celebrated by his wife Jean, their sons, their grandchildren, Tiffani, Carrie, Taylor, Brooke, Anna, Austin and Bryan, and his brothers and sisters, Jim, Mary, Ardythe, Joe and Liz. He leaves us all with a profound sense of gratitude for our time with him.

David asked that the family forego a service and simply throw a party to celebrate his life because that's how Pop Pop rolled. In lieu of flowers, and for those that desire, a donation can be made to woundedwarriorproject.com, a non-profit organization that supports wounded combat veterans, a cause that was always important to him.
