David Yun Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 2, 2023.
David Yun (1976-2023) passed away on Thursday, August 31st.

You could always count on three things with David - good food, good drink, and never a dull moment.

David was a lifelong entrepreneur who started his first company as a teenager. In the 90s, he founded Small Empire, a chain of skate shops and a skatepark which were instrumental in building New Jersey skate culture and community. He played a key role in a movement helping towns build municipal skateparks during a time when skateboarding was banned in public spaces. He went on to build skateparks at high-visibility events and locations, including Chelsea Piers and Central Park in New York City.

Once in Los Angeles, David started in real estate and founded the Eighty8 Group; in less than a decade, he became an award-winning agent and developer and founded one of the country's top-performing teams. He was named one of the Top 100 Real Estate Agents by the LA Business Journal, and made the Wall Street Journal's Real Trends List multiple times, as his success landed him in the top half of the top 1% of all real estate professionals in the country. He was invited to speak at Zillow and Compass events across the country.

More important than hustling and building empires was David's love of family. He was a fiercely loyal son, brother, father, husband, uncle, cousin, and nephew. He was most proud of his children and the relationship he built with them. To spend more time with his sons Lucas and Zeke ("EZ") when they were young, he sold his businesses and spent 16 months traveling around the world with the family. Upon returning to the States, he spent four years as a stay-at-home Dad while his boys were in elementary school. His favorite thing to do was to watch his boys play soccer and do things they loved. He loved eating, traveling, skiing, and golfing with his sons.

David believed in people and helped people believe in themselves. He inspired and mentored people to start new businesses, take chances on new relationships, and explore new places and ideas. He was a generous philanthropist, supporting many causes, and he believed you won in life by showing up and giving back. And he gave everyone a chance, no matter where they came from.

All people die, but not all people live. David lived! He packed so much life into his 46 years. He never liked to play it safe, believed many rules were meant to be broken, and had lightning in his veins. He traveled extensively, got his adrenaline going riding motorcycles, treasured old friends, and made new friends everywhere he went. He could poke fun at himself, liked people who could take a joke, and didn't take fashion rules or advice from anyone. He wore tees and jeans in an industry where business-formal is the norm. He loved a good deal and a great meal. And everyone wanted to party with him.

For everyone who remembers and loved David, his family asks that they remember him in their own way - which is what he would have wanted. He hated formality, stuffiness, and arbitrary rules. Everyone has a David story, and he'd want you to keep telling them. Wherever you are, he'd love if his friends raised a glass and shared an outrageous memory or prank he'd pulled off. (One of his best April Fool's pranks was announcing a run for Mayor on social media and immediately receiving campaign donations.)

He wanted to have a laugh and make an impact, and he has done that in spades. He loved fiercely, gave generously, and didn't always follow the rules. Please honor David's legacy by living your life to the fullest.

David is survived by his sons, Lucas and Zeke; his co-parent Naomi; his parents Hyungkoo and Insook; his sister Grace; his brother Josh and sister-in-law Romi; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, September 7 from 1-2 pm at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park in Westwood, CA.

Instead of flowers, please consider donating to a cause in David's name. He championed and supported charities for children, entrepreneurship, the homeless, and anyone else down on their luck.

I first had a chance to see into David's character and interests at our retreat in Connecticut. I remember how approachable he was and how sincere was his desire to create real value for his business, people they serve, and other members of the Mastermind group. I remember thinking what a quality person he was and that we were all lucky to have him in the group with us. A true inspiration for goodness, kindness, and humanity.

I met David when I joined Compass 6 years ago. Upon meeting him, he invited me to his house in Santa Monica for a crab boil and game night with his team. Albeit strangers in that moment, I was immediately welcomed by David and felt like family.
From fun days at the office, to holiday parties and being part of his pranks, David was the life of the party and reverberated an energy that was infectious.
He guided me through the process when I was trying to buy a home in Santa Monica, driving me and my dog around town and being honest if something was a deal or a total waste of money.
I will forever hold onto the memories we shared and your impact and life will be celebrated every day.

I met David in 2017 when it was just him and May-Ann, and we worked on a condo sale together. I recruited them to Compass, and now I truly cannot imagine what this company and our office will be like without his physical presence. Trying to picture the upcoming retreat without him brings me to tears. One year after the "after party" of our office holiday party, he brought a bunch of us back to his place and cooked up a ton of frozen dumplings and rice and noodles (with tons of sriracha, of course) because he wasn´t ready for the night to end. I´m sad that I don´t have many pictures of us together, but I found this record of a classic David prank. Miss you so much bud, thank you for loving us all so generously

David was a mentor to our friend group. My first time I met him was when he took my friend group and me to Palm Springs. It was truly the best week and he made sure that we couldn´t leave until he gave us life lessons about how to be independent. He gave us advice that I will cherish and use to become a better person. David loved to pull pranks on all of us and we would all leave laughing. I will miss David so much.

David was always fun and inviting, welcoming. When the Santa Monica Compass offices opened, he had told me "there's an empty office right next to ours. It's yours, take it". We spoke about motorcycles, joked about attending the office meeting for food. Ordinary conversations elevated by simply talking to an extraordinary person. He was the kind of guy who'd make you feel cool if you shared one sliver of something in common, because he was cool (and super genuinely humble about it) and it would almost rub off on you for a second! He'd always give you a fist bump, a high five, or some friendly banter regardless of where he came from or was going to next.

David was an amazing person who was extremely generous with his time and resources. He truly lived to help others. We went on a Compass retreat together recently in Connecticut and instantly made a huge impact on everyone he came in contact with. We had several zoom calls afterwards to discuss best practices and how we could help each other. As busy as he was, he always made time for friends and family. His legacy will live on forever and those of us who knew David, were truly blessed.

I first knew of David when I laughed out, loud, seeing an email blast on Halloween where he was dressed as Dorothy with the rest of his team as Wizard of Oz characters.
Over time we met at various Compass events and open houses. We attended the same church. We talked about our faith and various mission trips we had each been on. He had a dream of creating a nonprofit with his team, where together we could make a difference beyond real estate.

David did make a difference, in so many lives. I am honored to have called him my friend.

My favorite story is how I met David. I met David several years ago loading the truck late in the evening for AYSO's "Picnic In The Park." We quickly found out we knew so many of the same people. Good people. People that you're proud to say are friends. We did all the heavy lifting and that is exactly who David is. David is the person who does the job that nobody else wants to do. I first met David a few years ago when I was doing ju jitsu and had the same class as Lucas. David always had an upbeat vibe and was always really cool to everyone. Years later I attended a party at his house and he still remembered me from the ju jitsu days. I could tell David really cared about everyone around him and wanted the best for everyone. I am shocked and devastated to hear the news of his passing. He will be greatly missed. Sending prayers to the family .

Being a colleague of David's and doing transactions opposite him was always such a gift. He absolutely did love life and always seemed like he was coming from adventure or heading to one. I had recently just been chatting with him as our listings in the Pacific Palisades were across the street from one another. David, I will miss your huge smile, big heart and your stortytelling - I am sending you so much love and wish I had been able to give you one last hug. So many hugs to your family as well during incredibly difficult chapter.

Dave created a safe space for the skate community back in the 90s/2000s with Small Empire. It was my favorite place to go growing up. Fast forward to 2012, my brother Andy and I opened our first business (Pure MMA) and Dave was incredibly supportive. He even brought his kids to take class with us to help support! He was such an inspiration to so many people and always will be.
Here´s a photo of us with his boys!

All our kids went to Palm Springs for a mini vacation with David. In addition to making sure they had fun, he also wanted to instill a sense of responsibility by picking up after themselves. May God give you all peace beyond understanding.

I am deeply shocked and saddened, as I'm sure everyone who had the privilege of knowing you is as well. You were an extraordinary individual and a true industry luminary whom I deeply admired. Your newsletters, with their daring and edgy style, always pushed the boundaries, and I cherished that about them. I recall our conversations about how we both strived to challenge the status quo, and I admired your unwavering commitment to authenticity in an industry often defined by conformity.

Your unique spirit and refusal to conform to industry norms made you a true rockstar, and your impact will be felt for a long time to come. I will forever miss you and will continue to share your stories to ensure that your memory lives on. #compass

David is the coolest person I have worked for. He doesn´t want to be called boss. When I do his social media campaigns, he wants it witty, unique and 100% outrageously David. He has a strong respect for workmanship and ethics. Making him happy with the outputs I create is definitely a challenge but when I get that yes, I feel like I can do everything! I only knew David for a short amount of time, but in that time he completely changed my life. I´m am so grateful that I met David and to have called him my mentor. He took me under his wing and really believed in me. I wish we could have spent more time together, but I will forever cherish the memories I have of him. My favorite memory that I have with David is when he took me to his favorite taco spot. It was one of those street taco spots where they have the tent set up on the sidewalk. I was skeptical of the food, but David kept telling me that these were the best tacos he´s ever had. I couldn´t stop laughing when I saw that David brought his own fold out table (he was clearly prepared). We got our food and I told him how surprised I was by how good these tacos were. He said "Kyla, when I am eating dinner I am already thinking about what I´m going to eat for breakfast. So you have to trust me when I say I know where the good food is at." I almost spit out my food from how hard he made me laugh. We enjoyed our tacos and talked for a while. Our conversation started getting deep, and we were talking about how our past traumas helped push us to grow. We really connected and in that moment I was so happy that he was my mentor, boss, and friend. David was an amazing person and he was such an inspiration to me. I know David is at peace and looking over all of us. I am sending my love, thoughts, and prayers to all of David´s family, friends, and loved ones

My husband and I ran a youth camp in Oregon. A few years in David brought EZ for the week and loved it so much that the next few years Naomi and Lucas joined too. David loved spending the week with the camp kids. He did all the photography and at the end of the week he would put a slideshow together for the camp. He mentored one girl in photography and just recently he had reached out to one of the kids to possibly have a camp reunion to catch up w our TAYC family. I´ll never forget our precious family time at camp with our own kids as well as the campers. David was like a kid himself.
