Debra Edwards Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 9, 2025.
Debra Louise Edwards (Keeton), beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025, after a lengthy illness. Born on September 4, 1955, in Memphis, Tennessee, Debra grew up with a love for learning and a heart for teaching, a passion that shaped her extraordinary life.

Debra graduated from Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Class of 1973, before earning her undergraduate degree from Union University and a Master of Education from Dallas Baptist University. She dedicated her life to empowering others through education, beginning her career teaching third grade at Lakehill Preparatory School in Dallas, Texas. She went on to serve as an educator at Shelton School, Oak Hill Academy, West Dallas Community School, and Westwood School, all in the Dallas area.

Her work extended beyond the classroom, as she inspired countless colleagues and educators at Montessori conferences worldwide. One of her greatest professional joys was sharing her expertise in reading and Montessori methods to help children thrive. Her motto, "Love always first," guided her teaching and personal life, reminding all who knew her to love themselves, their families, and God.

Debra's career achievements included being a part of numerous centers for reading and Montessori work for children. She also authored influential educational articles, including one presented to the Texas Senate, advocating for the needs of students with learning differences.

In her later years, Debra enjoyed a vibrant retirement at Everleigh Forestwood, where she treasured her friendships, bible study group, loved playing cards, attending parties, and participating in fundraisers. She continued to find joy in her faith, serving in adult ministries at First Baptist Richardson and First Baptist Dallas.

Debra found her greatest happiness in her family. She was a loving mother to her children, Josh (Amber), Megan (Trevor), and Jim (Beth), and a proud grandmother to her adored grandchildren, Jordan, Jud, Ellie, and PJ. Debra's legacy of love and faith is carried forward by her brothers and sisters: Briggs and (Pam) Keeton, Elsie Green, Orville (Sharon) Keeton, John Keeton, Sandi (Marty) Ramirez, and Jeremy (Anna) Keeton. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alan S. Edwards, and her parents, Ewing and Martha Keeton.

Debra's favorite quote, "Love always first," is a reflection of her legacy-a life full of kindness, warmth, and devotion to Jesus. She asked to be remembered as someone who always looked towards Him and encouraged others to do the same.

A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Dallas on Friday, January 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The family invites all who knew her to attend.

In lieu of flowers, Debra requested that donations be made in her honor to the Shelton School to support their mission of helping students with learning differences: Shelton School Donations. https://www.shelton.org/support-shelton/designated-gifts

Debra Louise Edwards leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and education that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate to know her.

We are so sorry to hear of Debbie´s passing. She was a lovely, sweet, kind lady who was a special blessing to us during our time with the children.
We are happy for she and Alan to be together again for eternity, but are sad for her family left behind. Praise God Christians never have to say goodbye for the last time. Love you Deb.

Such a lovely woman who was special to everyone she met. Knew her as an educator and an amazing mom to Jim. She was always so kind and always had nice things to say. I remember we were on our way to the Junior trip in the airport at some g-d awful early hour going to San Diego and she was dropping Jim off. She came up to me and (I rolled out of bed) said "Oh! See you're beautiful even without makeup." I was obviously much younger then and I couldn't believe she said It. It was so sweet and it made my whole week. She taught me a lot about some of the learning differences while she was here. Always answered questions. She was so dedicated and gifted in her knowledge of learning differences. I'm so glad I got to know her and she will be missed.

I was fortunate to have worked with Debbie at Shelton School. What a bright, kind, gentle soul she has been. She has been missed at Shelton and I'm sure everywhere else she taught and trained teachers. Happy to think of her with Jesus, and reunited with Alan...but so sad for this great loss. My prayers for her family.

The three Keeton girls! You were the leader and took us all three to Union University to follow in your footsteps. Elsie graduated just like you but the Lord had other labs for me as he brought me back to TX, the you , Josh & little Megan not long after. I didn´t quite understand why every thing happened like it did til that June in Memphis when Daddy met Jesus. I am so happy ingmwas given the chance to spend the last 6 months with daddy but also bond with your kids. It´s meant the world going forward. I love you sis and miss you.
