Delaine was born on Jan. 19, 1936, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Vern K. and Irene (Hoeft) Merrill. He completed his high school degree at Marble Rock High School.

On Feb. 4, 1961, he was united in marriage to Elaine Weiner at Holy Name Catholic Church in Rockford, Iowa, and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City for numerous years.

He was engaged as a warehouse foreman for Borden's Ice Cream Co. for 19 years and then served the Mason City community as the sexton at St. Joseph-Elmwood Cemetery for over 19 years.

Following his retirement he loved to travel the country roads looking for just the right fieldstones for several projects at his home and those of his sons. During his jaunts he loved watching nature, especially the deer and eagles. One of his most recent outings included protecting a mother duck and her ducklings from oncoming traffic.

Del was a frequent visitor to eating establishments around North Iowa, including the Gobblers Roost, Hy-Vee and the Northwestern Steak House.

Those thankful in sharing Del's life include his two sons, Timothy "Tim" Merrill and his wife, Paige, and their children, Jamie and David Duda and Cooper Merrill, Michael "Mick" Merrill and his wife, Jere, and their children, Rachel, Erin and Ryan Lorentzen, all of Mason City; the mother of his children, Elaine Merrill; two sisters, LaVonne Edmundson of Deerwood, Minn., and Judy Miller and her husband, Jim, of Waterloo; and one brother, Robert Arhart and his wife, Delores, of Garner; along with nieces and nephews and a host of friends he enjoyed visiting with.

His parents preceded him in death along with Ella Mae Merrill and a brother-in-law, Early Edmundson.

Dear Dad,

I wish you didn't have to leave us so soon, it was too early.

Thanks to you and your influence, I see alot of your qualities and loves of life in me.

I will continue to hold all of those dear memories close to my heart forever.

You will be dearly missed by many. I'm sure missing you.

Often I cry because I miss you so much and in my own selfish way, wish you were still here; but I know you are in a better place and we will meet again someday.

Words cannot explain how much I LOVE and MISS YOU!

Your son,

Mick

Delaine's Family,

I'm so sorry to hear of Delaine's passing. I have known him since grade school and have many happy memories of our friendship. The summer between our junior and senior years we worked on the railroad in Newton, lived in a bunk car, and became very close friends. That friendship carried through after high school until I left Iowa.

I never visited Iowa without seeing him and enjoyed each get together. He was a wonderful person and a great friend.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Delaines Family: 20 July 2006

So sorry to hear of our loss at the passing of my friend. Lavonne, you are the only one I would remember now, as I am sorry I never met Curly's family.

The only time I saw him was at class reunions, or whenever else I was in Iowa.

Please accept our sympathies and condolances at this most difficult time.

Class of 1954 Larry Adams, and for Mary Lou my wife who also knew him over the past years.

We pray for God's peace and love to flood over each of you at this time and keep looking up^. (Hebrews 12:1,2)

With love, Larry and Mary Lou Adams

Mick & Tim

I would like to thank you for sharing your dad with our son Cory. Many times Cory went fishing at the pond at the cemetery and he and your dad would talk for hours. It was a time when Cory needed someone to talk and guide him, other than parents.

Thanks again your Dad was Angel here on earth just as he now is in heaven.

Tim and Mick,

Steve and I both have so many memories of Del - lots of fun times as we grew up together. Then, after my mom passed away, he was so kind hearted to my needs and my dad's needs during that time. I hope you and your families find comfort during this time. You are in our thoughts and prayers and we wish we could be with you, but please know we hold you close in our hearts.
