I would like to send my deepest condolences to the Harley family. I was a claasmate of Derrick at Savannah High. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. He was one of the only people that I knew that could keep up McCarthy at the skating rink...It was a pleasure to be surrounded by a kindred spirit such as Derrick. Stay strong and your family will stay in my prayers.

I met Derrick a few yrs ago through skating. I use to sit on the side and watch him go around the floor and wish that was me skating like I was on air. I use use to ask him to teach me how to skate and he will tell me, only if you get on floor lil girl..I would never get on the floor because I thought I was to cute to fall. Until one Thursday Derrick was at Star Castle doing what he does best(floating on air). I got on the floor and he started laughing. After a few rounds he floated on the side of me and said"just relax"move to the beat of the song. He tried to teach me and always said I have two left feet...... He was not just my skate brother but a friend. I know he is in a better place. My daughter( ur fat mama) and I will miss you dearly.

To the family of Derrick Harley,
I did not know Derrick personally, but when my son was a little boy he learned to love skating by watching Derrick at the old skating rink. As an adult my son worked at the Star Castle and continued to admire Derrick as a skater and as a person. When we heard about Derrick's passing we were both so sad. We are sending our prayers to all of Derrick's family and friends. He was truly someone very special. Heaven has an Awesome Skating Angel.

Wow, my friend, my cut-up-buddy, my co-worker, I'll never forget that "love-hate" relationship we had... something like (the professor & nikki parker) had. see there, you still have me smiling....and that, i will always carry with me, you were the one that always said that you can go anywhere in this world and show them up on the skating rink, now show them what you can do in heaven, not to mention that you were the bomb-diggity nurse as well. ok God has the last say, He needed you there more so than we did here, always in my heart, Harley.....God bless your family, and continue to give the strength.

I was so shocked and sad to see Derrick's picture in the obituaries. I used to work with him at St. Joes on the rehab floor when he was a PT tech. He was always the life of the party. He had such a great spirit that I couldn't help but smile and laugh when I saw him. I will never forget his hilarious jokes. Our paths crossed again when he was in nursing school and then again at May Howard just a couple of years ago when he was completing hearing and vision screenings with our students. I immediately started smiling and laughing when I realized he was here. Rest in peace Derrick...I have no doubt you'll keep the angels laughing!! I will look for you on the other side!!

Wow...man. When I heard of your passing, I couldn't do anything but cry. I didn't know you like that so much. I wasn't that close. But I knew what you represent: a happy, friendly, stylistic skater. You kinda taught me and my cousin to skate 18 years ago our so!!! You were who we looked up to. Now we must look up to acknowledge you. You deserve the honor for what you stood for. You brought peace, happiness, and style...we'll skate in memory of you labor day weekend and for the rest of our lives...skate in peace teacher :)

My sincere sympathy goes out to the Harley,Simmons,Ashley Family,I am so glad GOD let Derrick and I path to cross in this earthly world. We obtain our nursing degree together.I will miss your smile and your beautiful sense of humor. I haven't skated since Skate Inn days but I know you was THE BEST THE SAV HAD (and the surrounding area SKATE groups took notices),so my friend skate on in the heavenly rink and take your rest because, you have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith. Now there is in store for you the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to you on that day—and not only to you, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.2Timothy7-8. I met Derrick at St Joseph when I worked as a RN at night and he worked during the day shift. I used to think how young he was, yet so experienced in life, like an old spirit. We got along right off the rip. We would laugh instead of crying during the difficult times. He was so open to anything I would teach him, how to assess patients quickly and start iv's when others couldn't. He even started to call me Pa at work. When I moved to the day shift, we brought fear to the floor when we worked together, but everyone, including the patients and staff enjoyed the joy, laughter, and jokes we brought. I looked forward to going to work knowing that he was there. He was a complete professional and very good nurse. I trusted my children to his care when they went skating and eating afterwards together. He was like a son, a brother, a friend, a fellow warrior to me. I won't miss him because he continues to exist in my mind and memory. I thank God for his time in my life. I smile now because I know where he is and I will see him again. We once argued if there was skating in heaven. If he comes back and tells me there is and that we have reservations next week, I would'nt be suprised. Always with a joke and a smile.

Derrick.... I cant get you and your family off of my mind. I have known you for what seems like forever. I was just talking to my Mom the other day and we were talking about how you liked her pork chops. ha. And I was telling my oldest daughter how when she was born that you laid eyes on her for the first time and told me she was beautiful. I cant count how many times we went to the pool in Savannah Oaks and we all stayed there all day. or how many times we skated at the skating rink. I remember when you first started skating and how determined you were to get better, and you did! I remember all the times you would make me burst into laughter even on my bad days. I can honestly say I am blessed to of had a friend like you in this life. I have the memories that will last me until we meet again in Heaven. although it has been years since I last saw you, neither time nor distance can really define a friendship. Rest in Peace Derrick. we will all miss you.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

As a new nurse you lightened my workload and lifted my spirits with your comical words. As a friend you taught me strength. As you fought your battle you were still able to remain the Derrick I knew - the one who cared about everyone he ever came in contact with. Mallory and I will so miss our 'Words with Friends' game.
