Don Fleenor ABINGDON, Va. Don Fleenor, age 81, a well-known resident of Abingdon, and retired public school teacher passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born in Abingdon, on June 3, 1928, a son of the late Carl F. Fleenor and Nina Hines Fleenor. Mr. Fleenor was a graduate of Emory & Henry College where he received a bachelor's degree, and a graduate of East Tennessee State University where he received a master's degree. He also attended James Madison University and Wake Forest University. Mr. Fleenor was a retired school teacher for the Washington County Public School System where he spent several years teaching at various schools in the area. He was a member of the Abingdon Civitan Club, an Eagle Scout and former scoutmaster for Troop 22. He was a United States veteran having served in the Army Chemical Corps. Mr. Fleenor had several hobbies and interests. He was an avid golfer, woodworker, gardener, bird watcher and miniature train collector. He was a member of the Abingdon United Methodist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Francis Fleenor. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Fleenor of Abingdon; two sons, Donald E. Fleenor and wife Margie of Durham, N.C., and David L. Fleenor and wife Teresa of Indialantic, Fla.; five grandchildren, Kristin Galphin and husband Sam, Ryan Fleenor, Josh Fleenor, Kristen Collins and husband Casey and Chad Kirk and wife Lori; five great- grandchildren, Lily and Abby Galphin, James and Abigail Kirk and Christian Collins; one brother, Dr. Kenneth Fleenor and wife Shirley; one sister, Evelyn Aikman; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Fleenor; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Don Fleenor will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in the Abingdon United Methodist Church with Rev. Walter Weikel and Rev. Nicole Hill officiating. Burial will follow at Knollkreg Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Danny Jessee, Richard Wolters, Mike Lethcoe, Mike Fleenor, Sam Galphin and Chad Kirk. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Abingdon Civitan Club. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening at the Frost Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Abingdon United Methodist Church, 101 E. Main St., Abingdon, VA 24210, in memory of Don Fleenor.
