Donald Horton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2022.
Donald Edwin Horton, Jr., 77, passed away surrounded by love and held in light on Friday, August 5, at St. Therese at St. Odilia Hospice Home in Shoreview, Minnesota, after living with, and dying from, cancer caused by exposure to Agent Orange while serving the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Don was born in Chicago in 1945, the beloved son of Helen Strey Horton and Donald Edwin Horton, Sr. He lived in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood for the first 12 years of his life, then moved with his parents and sisters, Janet and Mary, to the Loch Lomond subdivision in Mundelein, Illinois, where they were active parishioners at Santa Maria del Popolo and later at St. Mary of the Annunciation.

His life was devoted to being in service to, and unconditionally accepting of, his cherished family and friends. He was tirelessly wisdom-seeking, focused on the quiet scholarship of self-betterment, and dedicated to his personal relationship with The Divine. He was a hopeless romantic, which led to bright marriages to the beautiful women, Patricia and Mary, who are mothers to his four beloved children, DJ, Leigha, Sara, and Claire.

While his life accomplishments were many and storied, from his 25 years as a Civil Rights/Employment Law plaintiff's attorney, to being awarded a "Thousand Points of Light" medal from President George H.W. Bush, to receiving The Wright Brothers "Master Pilot" Award from the FAA, to teaching law students at William Mitchell, to his work as a Court-appointed Mediator and Special Master, to authoring the lovely Christmas tale, "The Chestnut Pan," to taking his mother fishing for a week in Northern Minnesota every year after his father passed away, to returning to school to become a Licensed Clinical Therapist and a Healing Touch Practitioner, he would tell you his greatest achievement of all was serving others with love. His final prayers in the months prior to his death included that he be returned to Earth as a Healing Angel "to be with whomever needs me to be with them on their healing journey;" may our own prayers and good wishes guide, support, and encourage him along that journey.

Don leaves behind his beloved children: DJ Horton (Celeste), St. Paul, MN; Leigha Horton (Travis), Finlayson, MN; Sara Horton (Nick), St. Paul, MN; Claire Horton, Minneapolis, MN; his granddaughter, Katherine, St. Paul, MN; and his sisters: Janet Horton (Wally), Tucson, AZ; and Mary Sondag (Al), San Clemente, CA; and his dear feline companion, Frances Cabrini.

A memorial service for all who knew him will be at 1 pm on Saturday, August 13th at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 2300 Hamline Avenue North, Roseville, MN 55113. From 2-4 pm, there will be a gathering for storytelling, a photo slideshow, and spending time in loving company of Don's family and friends in St. Christopher's Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The MS Society, Heifer International, or St. Christopher's Episcopal Church.

I met Don once at Bruce's memorial service. We kept in contact via texting for several years. He and Bruce were friends during law school. Wishing his family comfort as he helped me so much. He was a kind friend.

Know our angel cousin Don is enjoying his new address surrounded by so many loved ones just as I am confident that his generous, thoughtful caring life lives on in the hearts and treasured memories of the countless lives he touched.l still treasure the stories he wrote and sent with homemade pumpkin bread; memories of him piloting his grandma in her 80s for her first plane ride; his acting as Mr Roberts in a play. He was so multi talented. Thanks for the many memories and good times til we meet again!!! Double love from your twin cousins Judy and Joyce

I met Don when in law school and got to know and respect him through our four years of student government and politics (he as the Student Bar Association and I was on its Board).

We stayed in touch for the rest of his life, and I always looked forward to our lunch conversations.
They were always interesting because he was so genuine, articulate, thoughtful and insightful.

Don was a refreshingly unique individual and thinker, whose knowledge, experience, and perspectives were both wide and deep.

His kindness, compassion and concern for others touched and left a mark on many lives

Don, pictured here as most of us on the Minnesota MS Motorcycle Escort Team will remember him. First to show up on a trike and last to lose his cool. He was a great friend to all of us and we'll probably be telling Don stories for quite some time. I had the honor of leading the team with him and sharing the title of Special Event Volunteer All-Stars in 2009. Many thanks to Don's family for sharing him with us.

I am so grateful to have been a friend of Don's for the past 5 years. He was amazingly thoughtful, and added his own special sense of humor to every situation. As many others have already stated, I am a better person for having known him. I was able to share numerous Sunday coffees and conversations with him, over the years, after services at St. Christopher's. I got to meet his wonderful cat Frances, and check out his many hummingbird feeders. He had so many stories to share and always spoke about of each of his children with pride. Don had a following of fans at church, many of whom loved him and helped him get to and from his church home right up until the end. I will miss our deeply philosophical conversations but he will forever be a part of me and of those he knew. My sincere condolences.

We only met your dad once. I remember him as fiercely interesting and incredibly witty. We are so sorry for your loss and thank him, through you, for his service to his Country.

Although your Dad and I never physically met, we knew each other very well. Through endless texting and speaking on the phone, we became very attached to each other.
He was such a caring and loving man with such a great and sometimes corny personality. It´s hard to believe but we loved each other dearly and he will always be in my heart.
