Kalec, Donald E., Sr.

Age 85 of Elmira, NY died peacefully at home Wednesday, August 17, 2016. He was predeceased by his parents Bernice Drabinski and Stanley Kalec as well as brothers Bernard and Edward. He leaves behind daughter AnnBernice Kalec with her son Finnegan as well as son Donald Kalec Jr. with his wife Melissa; sister-in-law, Lucille Kalec, in Williamsville, NY, several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Don lived his entire life in Elmira graduating from EFA in 1949. He graduated from Simmons School of Embalming in 1951 and received his funeral director license in 1952. In 1956 he and wife the late Regina Horka Kalec purchased the CL Davis Funeral Home and established the Kalec Funeral Home. Don's colorful personality and acerbic sense of humor was well known. Ever the community leader, he was a member of many organizations including the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis, the White Eagles Club, NFDA and the NY State Funeral Director's Association. He was a communicant of St. Casimir's Church and very active in church activities throughout his life. Per his request there will be no calling hours. Those wishing may attend his Mass of Christian Burial Thursday August 25th at 11 AM in St Casimir's Church followed by his burial at Sts. Peter & Paul's Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Kalec Funeral Home. The family would like to thank his devoted caregivers as well as the Chemung County Health Department nurses and Care First. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St Casimir's Church and Care First (envelopes available at the Mass).
