DOREEN DAVIS Obituary

Visit the Legacy Remembers website to view the full obituary.
Doreen Davis passed away on April 7, 2021 after a courageous and steadfast twenty-one year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She fought the disease with the same determination and tenacity that fueled her rise from a childhood of extreme poverty to the top of the legal profession. Doreen had no childhood interaction with the legal profession to serve as a role model in her hometown of Harvey's Lake, a small town near Wilkes-Barre. Every achievement was her own. Doreen held leadership roles in top Philadelphia and New York law firms, ultimately being named among the top labor lawyers in the country. At the time illness forced her to retire, she was lead counsel in the largest litigation ever before the National Labor Relations Board. Doreen believed that her greatest accomplishment was her daughter, Samantha Simmons. When Samantha was in elementary school, Doreen was elected to be chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, the first working mother and only the second woman to serve. Doreen was equally proud of Samantha's choice to become an attorney and of her loving marriage to Jason Besecker. Doreen also is survived by her husband of nearly thirty-two years, Robert Simmons, as well as numerous siblings, nieces, nephews and their progeny. She enjoyed the company of her many close friends and legal colleagues, who, along with her medical caregivers, provided support throughout her course of treatment. There will be a live-streamed service on Monday, April 12, at 10:30AM. (adathisrael.org/livestream). A live celebration will be held at a later date when safety will permit us to laugh and cry together. In the interim, raise a toast to her life with a glass of her favored white burgundy. Those who wish to remember her with a donation may do so to a charity of their own choosing or in her name to Women Against Abuse or The Breast Cancer Coalition.

I hope I am adding my message in the right place, if not pardon me. Doreen was known to me more by reputation. I had common business relationships with Robert and her name came up often. Hard to believe it has been four years since her passing, but I appreciate the opportunity to add my remembrance. As the years go by, we all are reminded that we are all just visiting this place and, hopefully, we can learn from Doreen that we can leave good friends with fond, lasting memories of our visit. Best to Robert and her family and friends.

Doreen paved the way for woman labor lawyers. I was a first year associate at MLB assigned to work on an NLRB matter with her. I wrote the position statement, prepped her for the hearing, and attended with her, managing the exhibits and other junior associate tasks. As usual, Doreen expertly got everything into the record, and it was time for closing arguments. She turned to me and said, "alright, you're up." I was terrified and thrilled and amazed that she would give me the last word at this important hearing for her client. I'm certain my nerves were obvious to everyone in the room, but I wanted to do her proud, and I hit all the important points. Doreen told me she was proud of me. We ended up winning.

On that day, I knew I wanted to be a labor lawyer. Doreen mentored me over the years and, when we had lunch or exchanged emails, she always mentioned my first hearing. She was an ever-present champion and support to me throughout my development - at a time when I often found myself the only woman in the room.

I am deeply grateful for our special friendship. Sending thoughts and prayers to all who knew her much better than I did.

In friendship,

Kirsten

I was a young associate at Morgan Lewis when I worked with Doreen. She was so very smart and always kind and funny. My fondest memory of her is sitting next to her and her husband at the Morgan Lewis formal dinner. Her husband told the waiter to keep the wine flowing and Doreen happily talked to me about her very sparkly Judith Leiber clutch. I had only been at Morgan for a few months but she made me feel valued.
My condolences to her family and friends.

Robert, Samantha and Jason, I am so sorry for your loss. Doreen was a wonderful Aunt to me and I will miss her dearly. She was so inspiring to me over the years. From my early days living in State College as a young kid while she was at Penn State (and seeing her lots as she came over to our house for dinners and babysitting!), to holidays growing up, to visiting her in Philly when I was in High School to seeing her lots when I was at Drexel University for 5 years while she lived in Philly and then when you (Robert) and Doreen moved out to Montgomery Ave. I had some good House Sitting weekends there! Lots of great memories. I am mostly grateful for how good she was to my Mom over the years. She will be very missed...

Doreen and I worked together many years ago as new lawyers at Obermayer, when we were 2 of only 4 female lawyers there. She was spirited, steadfast and dedicated and remained so throughout her life, both to her profession and her family. My deepest sympathy. May you find comfort in your memories.

I knew Doreen from the time we were both young lawyers. I always knew her as smart, kind and friendly. I am so, so sorry that she has lost her long battle with cancer. Robert and Samantha, my love and condolences to you on this untimely loss.

My sincere condolensces to Doreen's family and friends. Her word was her bond, a rare commodity in the legal profession, but one only had to meet and work with Doreen once to know her character and that she was an outstanding representative of her profession ... and a greater human being. She will be missed. Sincerely and respectfully, Michael Brophy

I am sad to hear that Doreen passed away. She worked across the hallway from me at Morgan Lewis. Even though she had a very busy workload, she was always willing to answer my questions and provide mentoring advice.

My heart just broke to learn this. I worked for Doreen for many years in the 80s/90s. One of the best bosses, and women, I have ever known. I have thought of her often since then and am glad we caught up a few years ago. I am so sorry for Robert and Samantha for their devastating loss. Thank you, Doreen, for being you. May your memory be a blessing.
