Doris Fulkman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 24, 2025.
Doris A. Fulkman, born on May 25, 1925, from Painesville Ohio, passed away at David Simpson House on March 22, 2025.

Doris spent much of her life in Madison, Ohio, where she raised her children and built a fulfilling career. While balancing family life, she worked for Larry and Jo Debate on Chapel Road. Once her children were grown, Doris dedicated nearly two decades to working alongside Dr. William Stoerkel at his Madison and Geneva Clinics. Before retiring, she joined her daughter Wynne at Convenient Food Mart on Madison Avenue in Painesville.

Doris was deeply connected to nature and found joy in the outdoors. She cherished hikes with her dogs and nightly walks through the neighborhood. Gardening was a particular passion, especially tending to her beloved rose garden. Alongside her late husband, Harold D. Fulkman, to whom she was married for 51 years, Doris took great pride in landscaping around her home. In addition to these pursuits, she found peace in reading books and studying the Bible. Her faith was an essential part of her life, bringing her comfort and guidance throughout the years.

Doris is lovingly remembered by her children: William Fulkman of North Kingsville; Karen Newman of Simsbury, Connecticut; Cathi Morris of Milford, Ohio; and Wynne Fulkman of Painesville, Ohio. She was a cherished grandmother to Sarah Newman Deming, Johanna Newman, Rebecca Newman, Paul (Susan) Morris, Kristen (Jeff) Hacker, Kurtis (Geri) Fulkman, and Becky Fulkman. Her great-grandchildren include Joshua, Eva, Tristan, Jadon, Jason, Elliana, Eve, Jayce, Logan, and Alex. Doris was preceded in death by her husband Harold D. Fulkman and two daughters, Joanne Fulkman and Bonita Sandquist.

A memorial gathering will be held on April 02, 2025, at Madison Cemetery on Arcola Road in Madison, Ohio. The service will begin at 11:00 AM and conclude at 11:30 AM. Stony Drain from Painesville Baptist Church will lead the graveside service.

Wynne extends heartfelt gratitude to Amanda for her kindness and compassion as Doris's caregiver during her battle with dementia. Special thanks also go to the in-home hospice team-Tara, Becky, and Latia, Keri and Mike-whose support made an immeasurable difference during this journey. Appreciation is also given to the team at David Simpson House for providing comfort in Doris's final days.

Doris's memory will live on through those who knew her best-the many friends whose lives she touched along the way. She is at peace with her Lord.

Dear Wynne,

It has been a long while, but when I saw your mom's obituary online, I was compelled to let you know how very sorry I am to hear of your loss. I remember your mom as someone with a great sense of humor; a dedicated wife and mother and she certainly was a hard worker. Praying for some peace and comfort for you and your family during this sad and difficult time.

I have great memories of mom packing up our wagon with food and drinks and heading to Red Bird beach for the afternoon after chores were done. She was the only mom brave enough to referee our softball games in the field next to our house. You got an automatic home run if it went into the briar patch. I remember coming home from school and finding noodles drying on the table for supper and always had to sneak a few. Sometimes it was chocolate chip cookies. She was definitely the momma bird of our flock and kept us well fed with her cooking skills. Mom was an avid reader and I became one too. She often read to us in an Irish accent and we were so impressed. Mom had a wonderful singing voice and sang in church often but also around the house. And she had the most incredible whistle that sounded like a bird but I never mastered that skill. Mom didn't have an easy life and had a hard childhood but she did the best for us all that she could. She buried 2 of her daughters which had to be an agony as any parent knows.
I thank God for my youngest sister Wynne and the care that she took of mom. There was nothing Wynne wouldn't do to make mom happy and she knew her the best.
I pray to see mom again one day, happy, healthy, singing and tending the gardens in Heaven.
