Douglas Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 9, 2018.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Douglas Weaver, the founder of Douglas J Companies, at the age of 77.

Doug was an entrepreneur, innovator and mentor. As the son of two hairdressers, he developed a passion for the salon industry early on. In 1967, Doug, along with his wife Sharon, established the Village Hair Shoppe, now known as Douglas J Salon & Spa – bringing to life his vision of developing talented team members who understood the value of caring for their guests' needs and focusing on community and social responsibility.

Doug wanted to bring the styles of the big city to a community more accustomed to the weekly wash and set. While most salons were curling and styling long hair, Douglas began to cut strong lines and shorter styles. For this, he was recognized for pushing the boundaries of hairdressing. He also was a pioneer in guest care setting the bar for providing an atmospere guests looked forward to with each visit.

In 1986, he opened a new chapter for the company with the inception of the Douglas J Academy of Cosmetology, now Douglas J Aveda Institute. With a world-class beauty school, Douglas J succeeded in taking the technical and business skills perfected for nearly half a century, and passing it on to new generations of aspiring stylists.

Anyone who knew Doug knew his highest priority was always his staff and guests. He loved being in the salon and seeing the many familiar faces of those he had cared for over the years. He was always happy to give advice to a young stylist, sweep hair or to open the door for one of his welcomed guests.

Doug's work has been published in several national and International magazines including American and Modern Salon. He also trained alongside many internationally known hairdressers including Yves Durif, Billy Wallace, Jon English, and Oscar Bond.

In 1998, Doug was awarded the Greater Lansing Entrepreneurial Award in the Service category. In 2003, after 30 years of service to Intercoiffure America and Canada, he was recognized for his continuous contribution and dedication to the advancement of the salon and style industries with the prestigious Intercoiffure Service Award.

Doug taught the company that good will does not just exist in the realm of salon and spa care. Giving back was always front and center to his vision. The company has donated more than $1.8 million dollars to charities worldwide.

Doug's legacy continues to grow and live on through his two sons, Scott and TJ Weaver who currently run the family business of nine locations including three salons and six schools.

While we mourn the loss of our great founder who has touched so many within our industry, we also celebrate his remarkable life and hope that it serves as an example to young people that hard work makes dreams come true and that selflessly serving a cause greater than themselves is the best life lived.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 25th at the Okemos Community Church, 4734 Okemos Road, Okemos, MI 48864. A Celebration Memorial will immediately follow at 4:00 pm at the University Club - Henry Center Atrium, 3435 Forest Road, Lansing, MI 48910.

Mr. Weaver was a class act. He had a calmness about him, a quiet storm, but he didn't take any BS.
Either you were all in with what he was doing or you were out! Mrs. Weaver is no slouch either. He was a visionary. The most important thing that I learned from Mr. Weaver ( and I never called him Doug) was follow through. He never told me that, I watched his feet. Mr. Weaver left much too early; too much left to do. Scott and TJ have some really big shoes to fill.
I just learned of the passing of Mr. Weaver. I was curious of what he was up to; I looked him up, then I learned.
May he rest In peace and may God Bless the Weaver family.

Doug's creativity, love for his family, beautiful salon and clients radiated in thoughts and actions. He made a difference in the lives of all who knew him. I was a loyal salon patron from day one in Okemos. I still remember the red shag carpeting in the tiny salon! Colleen Cooper

Dear Sharon and Family,

We will always remember Doug's infectious smile, droll sense of humor and his eagerness to help out------whether that help came in the form of words of encouragement and support or manual labor. Doug's flair for the innovative always came through, many times with a great deal of laughter. Knowing Doug for the past thirty-five years has been a blessing to us. May God grant you His peace and blessings.

I just learned of Doug's passing. He first began styling my hair at a little shop across from Frandor Shopping Center. He used to talk of, one day, opening his own shop. The rest is history. I continued to patronize his shops for the next 35 years until we moved away. What a lovely man in every sense of the word. We were always aware of what a wonderfully professional, yet friendly business he ran and how well he treated his customers and stylists. May you rest in peace dear Doug.

Sharon and family, I am Donna Elliott's sister, Margie. I also grew up with Doug, attended church together and were great friends. I am so sorry to see that you have lost him. I hope he and Donna are laughing again, in Heaven. We always did a lot of that.
My sincere sympathy to you and your family. Margie Wendt-Campbell

I came to East Lansing in 1978, as a new assistant professor. During the Memorial Day weekend Douglas J salon advertised that they would give some of their proceeds to the Jerry Lewis fund. I needed a haircut, so I went there. At that time Douglas J was a little building with just a few salon people. It has been 40 years and I have never had my hair cut anywhere other than Douglas J. They have grown and prospered because of the insight of Doug Weaver. He developed talent, inspired by the idea that a salon could be more than a "beauty parlor". The reason that I have kept coming back is that the salon providers are smart, intelligent women, who don't talk "beauty parlor". Camie has been cutting my hair for 20 years. She is a part of my life. Liz does my highlights, I love her also.

A few years ago, I was on the selection committee for Michigan Retailers Outstanding Retailer committee. I recommended Douglas J, and they received the award. Every year I ask Douglas J for a donation for the Zonta Club of East Lansing silent auction, an event designed to raise funds to help women in need in the community, they have never refused.

Douglas J is an outstanding business in our community. It exists because of Doug. Many years ago, I went to play tennis at a mixed doubles event at Court One. My last partner was a guy named Doug. He wasn't very good, and I wasn't either, but we had a lot of fun. The next day I went in to get my hair cut. In walked Doug. I said, "Doug what are you doing in this women's salon"then I realized it was Douglas J. He was a bad tennis player, but a wonderful entrepreneur. Thank you for Douglas J salon. Brenda Sternquist

Dear Weaver Family,
I am so sorry for your loss . As a former student and employee with such fond memories! The little talks Mr. Weaver pulled me aside or in his office to make me a better artist I use to this day! From the hand on the shoulder to the appropriate conversation and of course the technique I thank Mr. Weaver. Inviting me to a photo shoot or recommending a hair show I thank you. But my favorite is when he told me if You are going to be in this industry You must wear makeup!
As sad as I am for your loss and the beauty industry I know he is making all the angels beautiful up in heaven!
Sincerely, kammila (Kolar) Malarney

Dear Sharon, I am very sorry for your loss. My Mom use to work for Doug at the house in Okemos I believe 1970ish. Her name was Lori Nead. My mom loved working for him, and always told me how kind he was. She was greatful for his mentoring and friendship. She spoke very highly of your family. Prayers to all. He will be missed.

Dear Sharon and Family,
It has been our privilege to share Sago Way with you folks for over 41 years. It didn't take long to learn that Doug was a great person and caring neighbor. His generous personality and friendly demeanor helped make our neighborhood a better place. He will be greatly missed! Our thoughts and prayers will be with you all during this time of transition and sadness.

Doug was a complete gentleman and wonderful guy. I'm so sorry. I enjoyed every time he came to get massages. He and I laughed in surprise when we saw that his tennis shoes glowed in the dark! What a great loss.
