Dr. Caleb King Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 15, 2025.
Dr. Caleb Jewette King III-known simply as Cal to the many who loved him-passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 7, after a long illness. He was 82.

Born on May 9, 1943 in Jacksonville, Florida Cal's life was one of deep purpose, boundless curiosity, and quiet generosity. From the very beginning, water was his element. He became captain of the swim team at Duke University, where his leadership was marked by steady encouragement and tenacity. His academic journey took him next to Emory University, where he earned his Doctorate of Dental Surgery, and later to Boston University, where he completed a Ph.D. in periodontics.

For more than 40 years, Cal served the Gainesville community as a periodontist, combining technical skill with deep compassion. He also shared his expertise with future generations, teaching at the University of Florida College of Dentistry, where he was admired for his knowledge, patience, and dedication to the profession.

Beyond his professional life, Cal thrived in the outdoors. He could often be found tending his gardens in Gainesville and St. Augustine, or planning his next adventure. But his heart always returned to the water-whether lifeguarding on hot Florida days, swimming laps at the YMCA, or cheering from the stands. He coached and mentored countless swimmers, passing along not just technique, but the joy of the sport.

A passionate University of Florida fan, Cal rarely missed a swim meet, football game, basketball matchup, or baseball inning. He cheered loudest for the Gators-and louder still for his children and grandchildren.

Cal was preceded in death by his parents, Harry B. and Sarah Joe Tribble King, and his brother, James Tribble King. He is survived by his two sons, James King II (Jennifer) of Ponte Vedra Beach and Travis King (Talia) of Atlanta; his three grandchildren, Charlotte and Lucy King, and Elliott King, and his nephews Mark and Lee King and their families.

Cal's generosity was quiet but profound. He gave consistently to schools, museums, and people in need, always preferring to help behind the scenes rather than seek recognition. Whether funding a scholarship, supporting the arts, or offering direct help to someone going through a hard time, he gave from the heart-and without hesitation.

His legacy lives on not just in the gardens he tended, the swimmers he coached, or the students he taught, but in every life he quietly uplifted with kindness and love.

He will be deeply missed-and forever remembered.

I met Cal many years ago when my friend Jerry introduced us. Jerry had known him since childhood. Later I needed a periodontist and chose Cal. He was the best! In 2003 Cal joined my group of friends as we traveled to Fiji, NZ and Australia. He joined again when we went to India and Nepal, Africa, Amazonia, and Cuba. I admired Cal as a periodontist and as a person and friend who shared my love of travel. I will miss him greatly.

The photo was of Cal and myself in Patagonia under the Torres del Paine.
This was one of many wonderful travels that we enjoyed together and others with my wife Carolyn. I had the good fortune of many years of close friendship with this wonderful man and have lost one of my best mates. The obituary speaks volumes as you all know how much he touched anyone whom he met, be it as a mentor to a student or those lucky enough to count him as a friend. He always had time for anyone and was so caring and generous to all those he met. Both Carolyn and I mourn his loss but know that his legacy will live on in all those he touched. His impact on the world both in his work and in the example he set for us all is far reaching and will continue long after his passing.
God speed my friend.

Cal has been my neighbor for the three years I´ve lived at Oak Hammock. He has been instrumental to me with his dental knowledge. We often spoke of our love for orchids. I will always remember him.
