Dr. Jack was practicing and serving until the very end. I was diagnosed with CLL last year and Dr. Jack relayed to me through Sue that people can live with CLL for many many years. That was very comforting then, today, and will always be. Thank you Dr Jack.

A pioneer and a giant in the field. He is a big reason I spent all of my adult life practicing medical oncology. Thank you, Jack!

I knew Jack through our work together in Aptium Oncology, where I was the Associate Chief Medical Officer and he was my wise and benevolent boss, the Chief Medical Officer. Jack was always keenly observant of every person he encountered, a quality which certainly contributed to his being not only a superb clinician, but also an effective and well-respected manager. As many have observed, his wisdom was highly seasoned with wit, and a sense of humor to disarm any tension. He was a great mentor, and a good friend, and he will be very much missed.

Jack was a mentor when I was training as an oncologist. His obvious intelligence, breath of knowledge and commitment to the highest ideals of medicine were all so evident and were very encouraging for me as I became the first oncologist trained under him and Dr Schein at the newly constituted Lombardi Cancer Institute at Georgetown University. I shall always consider him a mentor and friend. God bless.

I would never have had a 40 year career in medical oncology and clinical therapeutic development without Jack Macdonald´s inspiration and mentoring. Jack was a superb physician with a quick and clever wit.
Thank you for all you did.

I met Jack back when I was an administrator at the NCI working for Vince DeVita. Besides Jack being a pleasure to work with, a capable leader and highly respected by his team and throughout the NCI community, he was "Always A Gentleman" in everything he did. It was my pleasure to have the opportunity to work with him.

A Prince
He was incredibly intelligent, witty, focused, dedicated and above all kind. They say doctors make the worst patients... as in so many things he was an exception to the rule. As an oncologist his bedside manner was legendary. In the face of a dire diagnosis he provided his patients with so much comfort, compassion and capability that they often defied incredible odds and lived to count him amongst their closest friends.
It turns out with roles reversed he was able to maintain the same strength and grace. Throughout his long and debilitating illness he never once complained, never felt sorry for himself. He met each new challenge with curiosity not with sorrow or anger. He was never unkind even in the most difficult of circumstances. His medical mind kept him engaged in this own decline... often even talking about himself in the 3 person as if discussing one of his own patients cases. He showed such gratitude to everyone who cared for him and was able to crack a joke to ease others when he could sense they were uncomfortable. He was never a very modest guy, another of his traits that served him well in the end. He made caring for him so very easy when it could have been so so much harder. My mother´s love devotion and attentiveness to through it all, a beautiful gift I feel lucky to have witnessed.
He set a high bar in everything he did in life... and also in death. I will always admire him and hope to carry his kindness with me forever

Jack was my friend and mentor for over 40 years. In my opinion, his knowledge of GI Cancers and his ability to lead the best and brightest oncologists of our generation was matched by the twinkle in his eye when he letting us know the direction we should take. Everyone loved and respected Jack. No one more than me. Lawrence (Larry) Leichman, MD Professor Emeritus, NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

What a great man. I was privileged to have Dr Macdonald as my attending physician in July of 1985 as a senior resident on the oncology team. He made everything interesting and fun. He always took time to make every case a teaching moment. It was this experience that caused me to change my career plans and went into oncology. I stayed at the University of Kentucky to do my fellowship in oncology under Dr. Macdonald. I am sure I was not the only member of the house staff to be influenced by him. He was a great internist as well as a great oncologist. I will always remember his smile and wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed greatly. I feel honored to have known him and to be able to call him a friend.

Is there a doctor in the house? Hello, Sue, Margaret, John, Kathleen and Fred, You must know how important Jack's skills as a doctor were to me. I am Carol Mahony, Sue's sister. My husband Dick shared in the praises for Jack. He was THE family doctor. Our daughter Carol Ann died of ovarian cancer at a young age in Chicago. Jack followed her care.
Jack and Sue shared good times with us. Ocean days in Westhampton Beach, Thanksgiving and Mom and Dad's Anniversary, Dad's 80th Birth-day. Many times Jack was in New York on a Sunday and drove to see Mom in Bronxville and take her to Hilltop for dinner. We were together for many celebrations. I really enjoyed the times they visited in Vero Beach for Super Bowl Sunday. High praise for "Fifty years of Smooth Sailing" that was the best party of all ! love, prayers and memories. Carol
