Poughkeepsie - Dustin's Journey

Dustin, a devoted son, father, uncle, brother, cousin, and friend to many was taken from us on Friday, January 16, 2021. Dustin was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on March 10, 1972 to Marilyn Bennett and Alphonso Higgs, both of whom predeceased him.

Dustin attended City of Poughkeepsie elementary school and Hyde Park middle & high schools. Dustin played many sports, but was most proficient at baseball, a sport he loved and followed closely.

In spite of the circumstances surrounding his death, Dustin's energy will live on in all of us. Among his many words of wisdom were: Be a person of your WORD, Tell the truth ALWAYS, and Always do what's RIGHT and not what feels good!

Dustin is survived by many family members, all of whom loved and adored him. He leaves behind his son, DåQuan Darby (Washington DC), daughter Tierra Darby (Maryland), sister Alexa Cave Wingate (Georgia), brothers Alphonso & James Higgs (Poughkeepsie), cousins/brothers Craig & Mike McKinnon (Texas) Gorgon & Gerard McKinnon (New York), uncle Richard (Linda) Bennett, aunt Lucia Bennett (Poughkeepsie) and an uncle Stanley Bennett (New Jersey) as well as many nieces & nephews. Dustin had many cousins he was close to and asked that they be mentioned — Lori Bennett Guerriero (Dexter, NY), Lettina Cave (Georgia) & Katisha Well (Florida).

Dustin will also be missed by as he stated — the LOVE of his life, Enidsia Darby (Maryland).

We will always hold Dustin (Sharif) in our hearts as we strive to continue his legacy of LIGHT, LOVE, & HONOR.

I had the privilege of being one of Dustin's elementary school teachers for a short period of time in my 3rd grade class in Hyde Park.
At the time Dustin was dealing with the loss of his Mother and was profoundly affected. There are countless reasons Dustin will be remembered by his loved ones with an unbreakable bond. I send my sincere condolences to all those who loved Dustin and those lives he touched during his lifetime.
