Earle Reid Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 30, 2011.
Dr. Earle Leroy Reid of Halifax (aged 78) passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on Thursday, May 26th 2011.
Born in Steam Mill Kings County Nova Scotia Dr. Reid was the son of Margaret (Peggy) nee Middleton and Earle Reid.
Dr. Reid had many interests that he pursued with determined and passionate vigor. Relaxation for Dr. Reid usually involved reading, gardening and his latest passion farming (a re-visit of his childhood growing up and working on the family farm). Dr. Reid was an ardent supporter of health and healthcare policy reform; this supported by a extensive knowledge of health care systems in the US, Europe, Britain and Russia.
After losing his father at the age of 6 due to a lack of prompt medical attention, Dr. Reid's future was determined. Driven to become a doctor he studied his way by lamp-light before and after chores on the farm to a Governor General's award for scholastic excellence. He pursued and attained his medical degree at Dalhousie University in 1957.
Dr. Reid (M.D., C.M., F.R.C.P. (C), F.A.C.C., F.A.C.P) started his practice 1957 (in Kentville NS) as a General Practitioner until moving to Halifax in 1965 to specialize. From 1965 to present he practiced medicine as a Specialist in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. From 1970 to 1985 Dr. Reid was Director of Intensive Care, Head of the Department of Medicine and president of Medical Staff at the old Halifax Infirmary (Queen St.). From 1969-2001 Dr. Reid served at Dalhousie University as Faculty of Medicine Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and from 1972 to 1985 he served as a Medical Advisory Committee Member. From 1991 to present, Dr. Reid was co-founder of and President of, North South Health Policy and Management Group. From 1983 to 1993 Dr. Reid was a Commissioner for the NS Commission on Drug Dependency and from 1988 to 1990 he was Vice Chair and Senior Medical Advisor to the Nova Scotia Royal Commission on Health Care.
Dr. Reid was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 50 years Janet (nee Dexter). While attending Dalhousie University, Dr. Reid was introduced to Janet during a youth dance at Bethany United church where they were later married. Dr. Reid was an active member of Bethany United Church for more than 55 years.
Dr. Reid is survived by 3 sons David, Douglas (Sharon) and Greg. He also has 3 brothers John (Marlene), Ivan (Janet) and George (Cheryl Ann) and was predeceased by his brother William (Bill). He also is survived by his sister in-law Donna Dexter; 7 grand children (Nicole Gyorfi (Nick), Alexander, Jonathan, Julianne, Liam, Keegan and Benjamin); as well as 2 great grandchildren (Alexander and Mya). Dr. Reid is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Reid was a family man; a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather as well as devoted son and brother. Dr. Reid was a passionate physician and loyal friend. He will be missed.
Funeral services for Dr. Reid will be held at Bethany United Church 5151 Clinton Avenue, Halifax Nova Scotia on Saturday, June 4th 2011 beginning at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia or to the Bethany United Church Music fund.

I am sad to hear of Doctor Reid's passing. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
I was his patient for the last few years and cannot speak highly enough of his professional and gentle bedside manner. I was not always the ideal patient with my constant questions but Dr Reid was always up to date with the latest research into my condition. We also enjoyed discussing local politics and latterly his farm and Highland Cattle.
I miss him already.
Thank you Dr Reid

An amazing man and doctor. Only met him once - that's all it took to sense that his knowledge, wisdom and gentle holistic approach surpassed any I've encountered. Karla Henderson, Lake Echo, NS

He was a doctor that could make sense out of the myriad of problems that patients present with. He was a man who deserved all the respect that he so clearly had from both patients and colleagues . He was known as a legend for his work ethic and competency. I hope he knew how much we all loved him . Dr Michele Mac Lean Halifax

Deepest sympathy to all the family/friends of Dr.Earle Reid.Dr.Reid was my doctor since 1986 and words cannot express what a fine, caring doctor and friend he was to me over the years. He was always so thorough yet always made time for a personal visit during all my appointments through the years.Several years ago,during/after complications of surgery,he saved my life.I will never forget him especially for that.My last appoinment with him was in March of 2011 and as usual,I felt so confident with his medical care and of course, our friendly visit while doing so.He will always be remembered with much GRATITUDE and highest respect. He made this world a much better place for all and deserves to rest in peace in heaven with his dear wife and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,God bless you all,Sincerely,Reginald and Melanie Daigle of Head Chezzetcook,N.S.

I read the notice of passing in the paper with great sorrow as Dr Reid was always larger than life. He was the face of healthcare for me when I entered nursing training at VGH in 1969 and as a result of his care I have had a long career in health care. I did have opportunity to work with him at the old Halifax Infirmary and echo many of the comments already written.

To the Reid family,
I first met Dr. Reid as a nursing student and later as a colleague at the Halifax Infirmary, he taught many well! As a Registered Nurse it is with great fondness and respect that many cherished memories were born. His sense of humor even at the most somber of times was paramount. Throughout the years he has treated both myself and family members with great skill and knowledge, thank you. He will be surrounded by many colleagues and his beautiful wife Judy in Heaven. It has been a priveledge to know a truly remarkable man whom always was available and dedicated his life to medicine learning and changes in health care delivery.
Never to be forgotten.
Sincere personal condolences,

To the Reid Family; My condolences! I'm a Registered Nurse who worked with Dr. Reid at the old Halifax Infirmary site. He was a wonderful man, a great physician, and a caring and supportive colleague- responsible in part for some of the best work memories that I have cherished through the years. He had a sense of humour that could crack you up, even in the most sombre situation, and this is probably what I will remember him most fondly for. When I turned 40, I found a big banner hanging across the steps of the old Infirmary as I walked in, wishing me a happy birthday- Dr. Reid saw me and gave me a big hug (can't help but smile thinking of the look on his face), his words of wisdom, "Don't worry, there's still life after 40!". I had just missed him when I stopped in to say hello a few months ago, but it doesn't matter because he will always hold a special place in my heart, as I'm sure he will for everyone else that knew him. I just want you to know that Heaven is really going to rock! Lovingly remembered, Lynn Currie

My wife and I went to Steam Mill School during the time Roy attended that school. We always called Dr. Earle Reid - "Roy". We were close to the whole family. They are a great family and Roy held the position of 'Faimly Head" in place of his Dad. A great guy gone to his final reward. We offer our warmest condolences to the family of "Roy".

Dr Reid is an icon in our medical community. I looked to him for his expert advice on the medical management of our clients in the military population. He understood the value of the whole team (nurse, dietitian, doctor, pharmacist etc..) and accessed our expertise regularly. He will be sadly missed and his memory will be maintained here on the military base for many years to come, especially when we have compicated clients. My condolences to the entire family
