Edgar Winger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 27, 2025.
Edgar ("Ed") Winger was born on Aug. 24, 1949, to Willi and Lilly (Mayer) Winger in Ellwangen, Germany. He immigrated to the United States with his mother and brother Sieg in 1952, settling in Bismark, North Dakota. Soon after, his father joined them in North Dakota and his sisters Edith and Ruth were later born there. In 1957, Ed and the other members of his family naturalized, becoming United States citizens. Ed attended Minot State University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army. His time in service brought him to Colorado. His military training included biathlon drills at Kenosha Pass. He did not see combat due to breaking a leg while jumping out of a plane during a training exercise, which landed him a desk job in which he finished out his service. He remained in Colorado after he was honorably discharged. In Colorado, Ed built a life for himself. He was a highly successful kitchen designer. He spent his weekends exploring the mountains of Colorado, leading Boy Scouts trips, backpacking, hiking, fly fishing and skiing Loveland with his sons, Justin and Derek (while his sons snowboarded). His sons were his pride and joy. He also always had a loyal dog, usually a husky, in tow on these adventures. In 2017, he retired to Cuenca, Educador. In Ecuador, he loved hiking and fly fishing in the Cajas Mountains and spending time with a close knit group of cherished friends. Ed is survived by his wife, Adrien, his son Justin (Cara), son Derek, brother Sieg (Frances), and sisters Edith (Jon) Green and Ruth (John) Ulness. There will be a memorial service for Ed on Sun., Aug, 31 in Bismark, ND. Please contact the family if you would like to join Ed's family for his Aug. 31 celebration of life.
