Edward Bernstein Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2022.
Edward Bernstein, 84, of Montvale, NJ, formerly of Allendale, NJ, and Baltimore, MD, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2022, after a brief battle with cancer.

Born to Harry and Ida Bernstein in Maryland, Ed grew up in Baltimore, graduating from Baltimore City High School, earning a B.E.S. degree in industrial engineering from The Johns Hopkins University (Class of 1959), and an MBA from Columbia University. While at Johns Hopkins, Ed was a notable three-sport scholar athlete playing lacrosse, soccer, and basketball for the Blue Jays. Among his other collegiate honors and recognition, Ed was a key member of the 1957 and 1959 USILA National Championship teams, earning the Penniman Award as the JHU lacrosse team's top midfielder in 1959 and ended his career with 31 goals and 27 assists. He was inducted into The Johns Hopkins Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. After his postgraduate studies at Columbia, Ed began his career in finance at Kuhn, Loeb & Co. in NYC. From there, he worked for several investment companies in New York and New Jersey until his retirement at the young age of 40!

An enthusiast of a healthy lifestyle, mentally and physically, Ed loved staying active daily by hiking with his wife, Phyllis, playing tennis, camping, sailing, skiing, swimming, and other outdoor pursuits. He was a lover of learning and knowledge, a philomath, always immersing himself in scholarly literature ranging in a wide variety of topics. Ed was fortunate to have been able to do everything he wanted to in his lifetime.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Phyllis Grossman. He also leaves behind his sons, Jorey T. Bernstein of Newport Beach, California, and Ari G. Bernstein of Allendale, his step-daughters Caren Marshall, Allison Varga, and Lesley Grossman, and his grandchildren. There will be a small private service for immediate family members only. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to Bancroft Neurohealth, Cherry Hill, New Jersey.
