Edward Joseph Sullivan was two weeks shy of his 91st birthday at the time of his death. He left the earth to go home, on March 5, 2015. At time of his passing, he resided in Longwood, Florida. He died of natural causes.
Ed, as he was known, was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 19, 1924, the youngest of five siblings born to John L. Sullivan and Margaret Rogan Sullivan. He was preceded in death by his brothers Lawrence, John, and Joseph, as well as his sister Mary.
Edward graduated from Westinghouse High School in Pittsburgh, PA. He was a gifted athlete lettering and receiving state-wide honors in football, basketball, baseball, and volleyball. In 1943, he joined the United States Army and fought in the European theater, under the leadership of General Patton, serving with distinction. Ed and two fellow soldiers were given credit for the first official kill of a V-2 rocket. In passing the story on to his grandchildren he called it “the biggest firework effect you would ever see.” He was a decorated war veteran receiving the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.
After the war, he returned to his home town where he attended the University of Pittsburgh. He later transferred to the University of Miami, Florida where he played football and graduated with a degree in Education. It was while attending the University of Miami he met Josephine Wilburn who was to become the love of his life, faithful friend, and companion for the next 66 years. Ed and Jo, as they were known, were married on August 2, 1948 in Coral Gables, Florida at the Church of the Little Flower Catholic Church. After their honeymoon in Havana, Cuba, the couple returned to Miami where they began their life together.
Ed also started his lengthy career as a teacher and coach. He was a true lover of his profession and the youth he influenced. He taught and coached at St. Peter and Paul Catholic School, St. Mary's Catholic School, Archbishop Curley High School, but most of his career was spent at North Miami Senior High School. He taught history and coached various sports, but most of his energies were spent with the varsity football and track teams. During his tenure as track coach, he won a State of Florida Championship. He subsequently became Head Coach of the football team and finished his career as Athletic Director.
All through his career he had a significant and positive influence upon the youth who were fortunate to cross his path. As testament to his impact on the lives that he touched, on his 90th birthday, he received over 250 cards and well-wishes from former students and athletes. They were filled with sentiments such as, "You positively changed my life" and "I wouldn't be who I am today without your influence".
After his retirement in 1986, Ed & Jo moved to Highlands, NC. In Highlands he remained an active member in the community. He worked at the Highlands Country Club as a starter and ranger. Subsequently, he spent years at the Highlands Community Center serving in a variety of capacities. He and Jo were also active members at the church of Our Lady of the Mountains.
Ed and Jo loved each other's company, and one of their favorite activities was to take long rides in the country, and essentially they continued that activity until Josephine's passing just 4 short months ago.
Edward is survived by his children , Michael A. Sullivan, his spouse Colleen, Lawrence J. Sullivan, Patrick E. Sullivan, Peggy Zelenty, her spouse Steven, and Kathleen L. Hall and her spouse Daniel. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Gregory Sullivan, Matthew Sullivan, Steven Zelenty, Dawn Sullivan, Danielle Zelenty, Michael Sullivan, Kevin Sullivan, Amy McCartney, John Sullivan, Christina Parkinson, Daniel Hall, Patrick Sullivan, Caitlin Zelenty, Thomas Sullivan, and Joseph Hall. My heartfelt condolences to the Sullivan family. I had the pleasure of being a colleague of Coach Sullivan as we both taught at North Miami Senior High. Always the gentleman and professional he touched many lives and left a legacy as a true Pioneer of the North Miami High family. I also taught several of his children as they embarked the journey of Spanish with Frank Maristany. Rest in peace my friend. Sincerely, Frank Maristany

My prayers and thoughts are with all of you with the loss of Coach Sullivan. He was an inspiration to me throughout my life. He was teacher (homeroom and History) and coach (football and track). He taught me to work hard for what I wanted on and off the field (or job) and not quit when things got hard.
Many years after graduation, he called Tony Palazzolo, I turned and he asked if I remembered him. Of course I responded, I would recognize those knuckles anywhere. ( During football practice if we were out of position on the line he would grab our facemask and move us where we should be, what we saw was his knuckles.) Life is pretty much the same sometimes without the facemask.
I really appreciated his efforts to mold us. He is greatly missed.

Coach Sullivan was a positive influence in so many lives, especially mine. He taught me many things, but the one that has served me well is perseverance - when you think you've given all that you have, reach down deep inside and there you will be surprised to find a little more.
I can visualize the Saints in heaven doing the 'gut run' for the Coach.
You all are in my prayers.

Coach Sullivan taught me American History at North Miami High School. He was a good teacher and it was a fun class to be in. I always remembered him more than any of the other teachers. I remember him being so proud of his family. He was a big influence on so many other young lives as well. Job well done, Coach Sullivan. My sincere condolences to his family.

I had the privilege of playing, Football and Basketball, for Coach Sullivan, at St. Marys High School. My father passed away when I was very young. I had four Epiphanies growing up, I count Ed as one of those. He had a great impact on who I am. As time caught up with us. my good friend Vic Miranda, who also played for Coach, and I caught up with him,in 1995 and continued to see him regularly since then. He was a great friend. I shall miss him, but I'm glad to know he will be helping to call the plays from heaven. God Rest, Coach. "Well done!" M. G. "Sanch" Sanchez, Gainesville, Florida.

As I said when my own father passed, he was like a stone cast into the water whose ripples of goodness go on and on, creating other ripples by nature of the very first one, instilling goodness as they continue along. Mr. Sullivan was a beautiful example of how to be, as we say in Yiddish, a real mensch.

I am so very sad that Uncle Ed has passed, thought there would be a little more time to plan a visit and enjoy his company. My Uncle's all kept memories of my Dad, the oldest of those "Pittsburgh Boys", alive for me, but Uncle Ed was the last. I will miss those stories. My love and sympathy to all my cousins...

I will always treasure my memories of Uncle (Big) Ed. He was the last of that great generation of Sullivans, the youngest of the four boys raised in Pittsburgh. The mold was broken, and all the pieces thrown away after he came along. He was a son and brother, an athlete, patriot, and a loving husband, father and uncle. I will remember, especially fondly, the way he and his older brother(s) would come into the room us (cousin) boys were supposed to be sleeping in, and gently persuade us to quiet down and go to sleep!
