Elizabeth Loomis Battle died peacefully on Sunday morning, February 6, 2022, in Charleston, SC, after a brief bout with cancer. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, on March 24, 1932, to Grace Loomis Battle and Richard Thomas Battle, Liz lived in many places around the world. After spending her childhood in Chattanooga, Tennessee and graduating from the Girls' Preparatory School there, she graduated from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and then lived in New York City, Manila, Jakarta, and Singapore with her then husband, Daniel Roberts. Years after her return to New York City from Southeast Asia, she graduated from the Brooklyn Law School and practiced law for Dewey Ballantine LLP. After living in New York City and Southampton, NY, she then moved to Charleston, SC, in the Spring of 2012. Her passions were the opera and flower arranging. She was the first female President of the Metropolitan Opera Club in NYC as well as a past Board Member of SpoletoUSA in Charleston. Her flower arrangements won awards as a member of the Southampton Garden Club and adorned her tables as she entertained in NYC, Southampton, and Charleston. She was a Social Member of the Meadow Club in Southampton, NY, and the Colony Club in New York City. A graveside service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, February 11, 2022, at the Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, SC. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be determined. Arrangements by J. I met Liz many years ago in Southampton though our dear mutual friend Tread Covington. It was an honor to be there for her to speak at Tread's funeral some years ago. But for Liz, what great style, grace and that unmistakable voice. Wit and intelligence in spades. She encouraged my interest in opera and for that I'm grateful. I was so sorry to hear of her passing - in a recent letter she remarked of the new home she was redoing - as though I'd be surprised at one of her favorite pastimes. She was truly special and I'll miss her.

Liz and I were undergraduates together at Harvard and
Radcliffe, both majoring in Philosophy. For at least 2
years she was my favorite date, elegant, lovely, and smart as they come. I visited her home on Lookout Mountain and met her parents. After she returned to the U.S. we got together several times in New York. By
then she was a lawyer---fresh out of Brooklyn! I called her every year on her birthday, usually reaching her and being greeted by that lovely drawl.

Liz Battle ranks high among the most significant people in my life.

I first met Liz in the Adult Forum at St Philips, but later got to know her better by sharing a shift in the Church Narthex as members of the Open Door committee. As I got to know her, I found her to be engaging, particularly due to her sense of humor and determined youthfulness. I am so sorry to hear of her passing and treasure the memories of that brief time getting to know her.
With Sympathy,
Gloria Avent
