Elliott Robertson Matthews III of Toney passed away on Monday. He was 83. Mr. Matthews was born in Huntsville to Elliott Robertson Matthews Jr. and Margaret Burns Matthews. He was a member of The Sons of the Confederate Veterans, Sons of the American Revolution and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in both the European and Pacific Theater. Mr. Matthews was a retired educator and farmer in Limestone County and was preceded in death by his wife, Lorna Lucas Matthews. Survivors include his nephews, James R. Boyd of Norfolk, Va., and John S. Crutcher of Athens; nieces, Bettie B. Shackelford of Birmingham, and Elliott J. Payne of Athens; sister-in-law, Jean Matthews of Melbourn, Fla.; and several great nieces and nephews. Visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church with Rev. Jerrilee Lewallen officiating. Visitation will be from 10 until the start of service at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with McConnell Funeral Home directing. Pembroke Rees, John S. Crutcher, James Shackelford, John Shackelford, James R. Boyd and Robert McDowell will serve as pallbearers.
