EMILY OLIVER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 18, 2010.
OLIVER MRS. HENRY, JR.
Died Friday, April 16, 2010. She had lived in her Sewickley Heights home for sixty-four years. Her death was of natural causes in her one hundredth year. Known to family and friends as Emily, Mrs. Oliver was born in Pittsburgh on August 14, 1910 to Margaretta Park and William Frew. They lived, and she was raised on Devon Road. She attended local schools, then went on to the Ethel Walker School in Simsbury, Connecticut from which she was graduated with the class of 1927. This was followed with a year of study in Florence, Italy prior to marriage on May 1, 1932. During her early summers the family traveled extensively throughout the western United States and Canada camping, horseback riding and fishing. The destinations included Santa Barbara, California, where her mother had been raised, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Banff British Columbia and Jackson, Wyoming. The family bought land in Jackson Hole Wyoming in 1923 and built a fishing camp there the follow year. Known as the Four Lazy F Ranch, for the "4 Lazy Frews", this property was left to Mrs. Oliver at her mother's death in 1949. With the help of her husband, Henry Oliver, Jr., and her two sons she ran the property as a summer guest ranch and a dry fly fishing resort from 1950 until 2006 when the property became part of Grand Teton National Park. While spending summers in Wyoming, Mrs. Oliver's winter home was Sewickley, PA, with her passion being the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. Her grandfather, William Nimick Frew, has been appointed the first president of the Carnegie Institute Board by Mr. Andrew Carnegie. Her father had been president of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1943 until his death in 1948. Mrs. Oliver had been president and a founding member of the Womens Committee of the Carnegie Musuem. Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Oliver, Jr.; their infant son, William Frew Oliver; and her sister, Margaretta Conderman. She is survived by two sons, Henry Oliver III of Sante Fe, New Mexico and Charles Oliver II of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; and three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Services will be private. Contributions may be made to the Carnegie Museum Womens Committee in Pittsburgh or to St. John Hospital, Jackson, Wyoming, where her father had been the first Chairman of the Board of Directors. Arrangements by COPELANDS SEWICKLEY.

Dear Oliver Family: My name is Carol Tomé and I'm Mildred Buchenroth's eldest granddaughter. Mrs. Oliver was my Godmother and while we didn't spend much time together, I want you to know she was an incredibly special person to me and my entire family. Mrs. Oliver had a long and lovely life and we were priviledged to know her. We all send our condolences. Kind Regards.

To the family of Mrs. Henry (W.?) Oliver Jr.,
I am sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Oliver. You have my condolences. I did not know her or that branch of the Frew family but I am (as I understand it) a very distant relative. I am or was a friend of George Oliver (descendant of Senator George Oliver) and his wife (whose name I forget, maybe it is also Emily) of Sewickley, PA. I have not talked to them in 7 years so I don't know if they are still around. I remember (vaguely) the estate in Oakland called "Beechwood", belonging to Wm. Nimick Frew at the intersection of 5th and Shady which was torn down in the middle 1950's. I am not a descendant of Nimick Frew but of an earlier ancestor. I currently live in Moon Twp. (just across the river from Sewickley). We have two daughters, both married, so it seems there are less and less Frews as time goes on.
Mrs. H. Oliver, Jr. had a very interesting life. She was the same age as my mother. I'm saddened by the demise of any Frew. May God comfort and bless you in this time of bereavement.
Mr. William Earl Frew

I will think of you at this time of loss. I truly cared for your mother and felt privileged to know her. She will be missed but at last she is at peace. Sincerely, Margot
