Wow. I remember listening to him on the radio. Him, Tippie Calloway, Connie Flint - all those names bring back memories from when I lived in Atlanta.

Pop,

It was five years ago today that you and I had a conversation that would change my life. I remember it like it was yesterday. I kept asking God to "please not let my daddy die on Friday the 13th". I'm not superstitious but I wasn't ready for you to take your rest.

I miss you so much that it is unexplainable at times. Five years seems like only yesterday. I replay this weekend in my mine just about every single day.

Atlanta is not the same without you. However, I kept my promise that I made to you at the hospital, although it was five years in the making and my life is complete now. I am continuing the Gospel Caravan and the 2nd Sunday in March concerts just as you asked.

Father's day is just another day for me.

Until we meet again.

Your baby girl,
Edna "Ms. International", "Puddin"

Pop,

It's been three years (June 14, 2003) but it seems like it was only yesterday that my father and friend took his final breath.

I miss our earthly conversations but we still speak. I miss the sermons, birthday and Christmas presents, Saturday morning toast and kool-aid, 411 info. sessions, Varsity hotdogs, typing those last minute Caravan papers that had to be done that day, arguments, braves games and westerns, laughter, jokes, good times, bad times. Plainly put, I miss you.

However, the miraculous blessings, gifts, good Doctor's report, scholarships, job opportunities, weeding out of bad seeds, and constant protection and comfort reaffirms in my spirit that you and grandmother are up there watching my footsteps. You make sure that when a door is closed, a window quickly opens and I thank you for this.

I'm was proud of you then for everything that you accomplished and still proud of you. Atlanta is not the same without your Break of Day morning show, Caravans and Anniversaries. No one understood the time and effort you put in everything you did. They know now. There was a lot of substance behind that tuxedo!

I miss you hear on earth but I know that I will see you and grandmother again.

Love always,

Edna

I wonder if I would be an interfaith minister now had Brother Patterson not had such a wonderful influence on me at a tender age - I was a little white girl who would skip boring church to listen to the radio in the car and in 1963-64 always be late to school because I was driving around listening to Bro. Patterson's show - I learned a deep theology of praise and wisdom and joy that way - thank you, and may your heavenly rewards be very rich indeed as you were certainly faithful...God bless those of you who remain and feel his loss...

BRO. ESMOND WAS AN INSPIRATION TO ME AND A LOT OF DAYS HE GAVE ME HOPE AND PEACE JUST BY HEARING HIM ON THE RADIO AND THE TRUE WORDS HE SPOKE "WHEN GOD CLOSES A DOOR, HE'LL OPEN A WINDOW." THANKS TO GOD AND THE PATTERSON FAMILY FOR SHARING HIM WITH US. HE WILL BE MISSED. LOVE TO THE FAMILY AND KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. I WILL NEVER FORGET HIM.

On behalf of my mother, Mrs. Mozelle Patterson and family, we sincerely thank all of you for your kind words. We are truly overwhelmed by the amount of love that has been shared with our family in our time of a tremendous loss.

My father left a legacy that will be hard to sustain. He never had a quest for fortune or fame, just a common man who wanted to continue letting the world know that "Jesus is alive and well".

Thank you for your prayers and continue praying that we remain strong and of good courage.

Sincerely,

Edna R. Patterson

A Sincere Expression of Sympathy to you Mrs Patterson and your family in the loss of your loved one, Bro. Esmond J.Patterson, the one and only.

He and I would talk every Saturday while he was riding with Sister Betty passing out flyers for his Caravan.

He always encouraged me, uplifted my spirits, told me a humorous story and assured me he was "keeping Sister Betty in line." He shared with me how very grateful and thankful he was to have her assisting him because she is reliable and trustworthy.

His name he gave to me was "The Bishop."

I'd like to leave this familar scripture with you to ponder in your hearts and minds, Ecclesiastes 3:1-22, it will Strenghen and Comfort you.

Bro. Patterson served his purpose and served it quite well.

One of Brother "Es"'s purposes in life was to inspire saints as we travel on this earthly pilgrimage. He fulfilled that by his dedication to play the music, rhyme from time to time & give others a springboard into a fulfillment of their destiny. He will be missed & we hope that others who follow in the communication field will learn from the "people" person that Brother Es was. He was the same everywhere he went. Never too big to shake hands & chat--at the Civic Center or at a Picadilly restaurant at South Dekalb. Our prayers are with the family for we know that he is with the Lord.

We will miss Brother Patt's voice on that radio. We grew up with Bro. Patt's voice and we were motivated to make it through the day with God's help. We are continuing to pray for the Family. Mozell we will continue to send a special prayer for you to continue to be strong and make it through this season because a spiritual turnaround will happen for you and your ministry. My mother, Grace McKissick is continuing to pray for the Family also. We love you. Bro. Es will always have a place in our heart. Stay strong because God is in control!

My family and are were sad to hear of Mr. Patterson's passing. In 1971 we wanted to meet someone famous and our Late Mother introduced us to BROTHER ESMOND PATTERSON, he really lifted our sprites just with his presence in our home. To the family, remember he said it best for over 20 years.

I was formally introduced to Mr. Patterson while paying tribute to Tippy Calloway through my friend Kevin Taylor. We spoke between the breaks about him knowing my uncle, Ken Knight at WERD and he told me he remembered him. I'm glad I got a chance to meet him and let him know of the dedication of history I had written on he and his peers. Unintentionally, I misspelled his name in the book by one letter, but, he is on the DJ Honor Roll listing in "Black Radio...Winner Takes All!" America's 1st. Black DJs. And when he heard of this, he said, "Thank You".

To the family I will get a copy of the book to you. I am praying for you.

My Aunt, who knew him from the WERD days is also praying for your family.

Dear Patterson Family:

I would like to express my sympathy

during this great time of loss.

I met Brother Patterson after graduation from Clark College in 1982 and volunteered at WAOK to get work experience. He always greeted me with a smile and a friendly hello. I was assisting Joe Walker in the Sports Department at the time. I have fond memories of watching Brother Patterson broadcast his radio show as well as attending his famous "Caravans" with my husband, Pastor George Boyd, Jr. May God continue to give you strength.

A True Celebration Of Life:

When I first started my career in broadcasting at WAOK, I had the opportunity to work with one of the best (Esmond Patterson). You cannot imagine how dedicated he was to his craft of spreading the good word across the airwaves. I was fortunate to see Mr. Patterson in a way people people couldn't... in the studio. It wasn't his tux or his cologne's that defined this man...it was his zest for life and respect of others that would him one of a kind.

During my tenure at WXIA- 11 Alive, I put together a feature story about Esmond Patterson which was picked up and aired on CNN. I wanted the world to see this great man in action. Friends, I covered many stories during my career in television....but the story on Mr. Patterson was one of the best feature stories I have ever done.

I thank God and the Patterson Family for sharing with all of us the man I called "The best dressed angel behind a microphone".

Esmond, Thank you for teaching me by simply being yourself. I know your not silent....your still spreading the gospel in the heavens above.

Your friend;

Mrs. Patterson:

You had a wonderful husband that God allowed to share with you for 47 years I believe I read. I can remember when I was a little girl my mother used to listed to him all the time on Sundays as we were getting dressed for Sunday school/church and on our way to church we'd hear him talking about fat back, pig ears, etc. at some grocery store if I'm not mistaken at the time near the Federal Pen in Atlanta. I am just 3 years shy of 40 years old now so I know Brother Patterson has been on the radio making Atlanta smile and giving them hope for many, many years. And his favorite saying about Atlanta being sweet like sugar or something close to that affect really made you feel good. He was just that kind of person. But now we had to give him back to God and he's looking down on us saying his favorite saying ... Atanta you're sweet just like suga .. until we meet again. Mrs. Patterson, keep your husband in your heart and I know God will continue to comfort you and give you direction. Stay sweet as you are. God loves you and so does Atlanta.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Patterson. I am still in shock and disbelief. When moving to the Atlanta area in 78 he was one of the first radio announcers that I listened to and enjoyed. I attended a concert once with one of my senior friends and we had a great time and it was there I could put a name with a face. Brother Patterson will be missed by many. And I just want to thank his family and the radio stations for giving him the time to share God's love and mercies for so many years through song and testaments.
