Francis Ralph (Frank) Ginanni, whose last intelligible words were “Screw those assholes,” died on September 19, 2022 in Murfreesboro, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Martina Moizuk Ginanni, and older brother, Joseph. He is survived by daughters, Kathryn Scott Ginanni (Murfreesboro, TN) and Claudia Neal Ginanni (Philadelphia, PA); daughter-in-law Heather Levi (Philadelphia, PA); nephews, Mark Ginanni (Palo Alto, CA), Joseph Ginanni (San Jose, CA); niece, Joanne Ginanni Caruth (Tucson, AZ); several great-nephews, great-niece, great-great-nephews, and great-great-niece.
Born on October 3, 1931, he was raised in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Frank served one year in the US Navy and was honorably discharged, which is surprising given how much he disliked it. He migrated to California with his family around 1950, and San Francisco was the home of his heart. He worked for some years at Eastman Kodak in Palo Alto, CA, while finishing his undergraduate degree at San Jose State University. A football injury in a game against Cal Poly left him with an impressive scar on his right knee and caused him to change his major from physical education to English. In 1961 he married Mary Belle Neal, and they had the two daughters. The family spent a year in Charlottesville, VA, where he completed a master’s degree at University of Virginia. In 1964, the family moved to Murfreesboro, where both Frank and Mary Belle taught at Middle Tennessee State College (now MTSU). At the urging of his beloved department chair, Richard (Dick) Peck, he went to Auburn University for a PhD., and then returned to MTSU to teach in the English department for over 35 years. He served as chair of the department for several years before retiring in 1994.
Frank was active in the Murfreesboro Little Theatre, acting, directing, and serving on the board. One of his most memorable roles was that of King Henry II in “Lion in Winter.” He was also an avid golfer until arthritis in his neck finally caused him to give it up. Most of all, Frank loved to travel, eat good food, and cook. Many were the family, friends, and colleagues who enjoyed dining at his table. Also an aficionado of restaurant dining, he always tipped generously.
There will be no service; if you’d like to honor his memory, please consider donations to the Nashville Symphony, We Remember You (Murfreesboro), or the organization of your choice.

While a student at MTSU Dr. Ginanni did a favor for me that helped me through a difficult situation. I will never forget his caring attitude and his willingness to listen and help.

Claudia -- I'm so sorry for your loss. I knew Dr. Ginanni when you and I went to school together (he was impossible to miss) and then I had him as a professor for my undergrad at MTSU. He always had a great story to tell -- I still remember him telling me to never get a hot dog from a street vendor in Paris and why -- I story that am bound to honor if I ever get to Paris. I have fond memories of him. He was one of a kind.

Katy and Claudia, I just heard about your father's passing via the MTSU email that was sent. I want to offer my most sincere condolences and prayers for each of you and your family. Many years ago, as our closest neighbor, in Murfreesboro, Frank was so dear to us; I regret not being able to visit him in recent years. I have just retired from MTSU and now live in Florida. As your father, he held both of you most dearly and shared many wonderful father/daughter memories with us. I know that you will cherish all of those memories and many more.

Uncle Frank, gone but not forgotten. As my Dad's brother, they could not be more different. Many discussions were had in our kitchen and I don't think either one ever gave in! He was a smart and loving man and will be missed.

One of the best trips my late husband, Michael, and I took was to San Francisco between Christmas and New Years some time in the 1990s. We went for the MLA conference, and Frank was there for that and also to visit his parents. Frank was our tour guide and made sure we went to some of his favorite restaurants and other sites in that wonderful city. He even drove us down to Half Moon Bay where we saw, in a bar, a pleasant young motorcycle rider shoot down a "Jack o lantern"--a shot glass of half Jack Daniel's whiskey and half tequila. Even the bartender was astounded! Another unforgettable sight occurred in a redwood forest, a little dark, a little spooky, and the location of a restaurant Frank liked. The only visible sign of such a place was a giant neon martini glass, glowing among the redwoods and the moss. We miss him and have lots of memories to mull over.

Frank was his own man. He could be harsh but he was also generous and friend to all. He was my friend and I miss him already. I look forward to exchanging stories with others.
