GRUNDY, Va. — Frank H. Davis, age 85, of Grundy, Va., died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009 in Buchanan General Hospital at Grundy following an extended illness.Born April 10, 1924 in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late James Robert and Lydia Rebecca Stacy Davis.He was a decorated World War II veteran, receiving a Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster, two Bronze Service Stars, and two Overseas Service Bars, serving in the U.S. Army Third Infantry Division European Campaign. He was a former bus driver for the Black and White Transit Company of Grundy, the Trailways Bus Company, also employed by Virginia Funeral Home and was a retired coal miner and electrician for Jewell Smokeless Corp. He was a member of the Little Prater Church of Christ.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 19 siblings, being the last surviving son of his immediate family; and one daughter, Jeannine Crawford.Survivors: His wife of 55 years, Gladys Davis, Grundy, Va.; one son, James Robert (Bob) Davis and wife Jan, Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Susan Thimlar and husband Dick, Defiance, Ohio, Rebecca Elswick and husband Hubert, Big Rock, Va.; one sister, Alice Collins, Johnson City, Tenn.; three grandsons, Ricky Ooten, Defiance, Ohio, Ryan and Ross Elswick, Big Rock, Va.; three granddaughters, Cindy Russell and Kristi Miller of Defiance, Ohio, and Katie Elswick of Big Rock, Va.; six great-grandchildren.Funeral services for Frank H. Davis will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Little Prater Church of Christ in Grundy, Va. with Evangelist Troy Brown officiating with burial to follow in the Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock, Va. The family will receive friends Friday evening after 6 p.m. at the Virginia Funeral Home Chapel at Grundy, Va. Military graveside rites will be conducted by John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion. Pallbearers will be family and friends.
